His inspiration
"I am inspired by the England one imagines in books, the green, lush countryside and the elegant women. A lot of my embroidery is taken from intricate vintage woven tapestries of 19th century courtyard England. I love the prints on English wallpapers," he jokes. "Just recently on a visit to Paris I fell in love with a gold embossed wallpaper and its pattern shapes and colours which were crafted elaborately expressing an artistic fervour that is exclusive to the Europeans." He continues, "I wanted to do a sample but when I heard the exorbitant price of 1000 Euros for a metre I decided to draw it by hand," he laughs and then states matter-of-factly, "No really I find inspiration in paintings, textile art and design and European history."
Despite his wide appeal Lascelles admits he is ultra-exclusive. His clothes are available at only a select few fashion houses such as Cypress in Bandra, and Citrine in Delhi.
Fashion mantra
According to Lascelles, "Women look wonderful in anything worn properly." He likes a balance. "If you are wearing heavily embellished clothes then you should tone down your accessories. If you are wearing clothes that don't have embroidery or sequence than ramp up your look with accessories such as jewelled bags, shoes and belts that are really in."
He clarifies, "The advice I would give any woman is that she should have confidence in what she is wearing. Everyone wants a dress like Angelina Jolie or J Lo but remember they look the way they do because of their celebrity image and who they are. If you are not confident then even the best of clothes will look dull and drab," he observes.

"Either you wear the outfit or the outfit wears you..."
His list of accomplishments displays his remarkable range in talent. He is the first designer to make bed sheets walk and sashay down the ramp in two successful fashion shows where people were enthralled with the beauty of the clothes (bed linens, towels, etc...) that had been draped, pinned and cut to the female form.
His prêt line is due this Diwali. "Its more difficult to design for a wider audience," he says. "You have to make a design that is not so simple that it can be found anywhere and it shouldn't be so complicated that it can not be worn by many women for any part of the day. I have learned early that only a minute percentage of the population has a model-type physique so the clothes have to be global in their appeal," he observes and sums it up, "And they should fit many body types. Hide the body flaws and accentuate a woman's attributes." Now that's an achievement!
