Baadshah of the bustier
Lascelles Symons
|
In less than a decade, Lascelles Symons, designer l'extraordinaire has broken away from the milieu. In fashion speak he's the guy that's well on the way to reaching his peak. Former model turned designer Lascelles can boast of an elite clientèle of loyalists from socialites, Queenie Singh and Ramona Garware, to a flurry of couture models; Carol Gracias and Waluscha Robinson swear by him, on to the bling-bling industry clients at home and abroad. Friends and celebrities Suchitra Pillai and Anu Ahuja wouldn't dare have any other design their wedding gowns.
In one voice they all gush this is the one designer who knows how to unite simplicity with elegance and keep it happening, hot and timeless. Whew! In other words he knows what makes a woman look her simple sexy best. No easy accomplishment in a country filled with a plethora of designers that cater to each and every price point from prêt to the haute-couture fashion divas.
Known as the "Baadshah of the bustier" Lascelles has re-invented the feminine mystique by making bosoms chic once again. "This is something that seems a natural extension of the Indian female form so I think it was intuitive at that time," says Lascelles.
Pushing up and moving forward... the corset can trace back its lineage to the days of pomp and ceremony of the Elizabethan Age of the 16th century... onto the romantic baroque timelessness of the following hundred years.

The raison de etre
"When I started clothes, I was not inclined to simpler garments as I am today," muses Lascelles. "I was most intrigued with the labyrinth of construction in making the form. Also a decade earlier the fashion industry for high-end fashion was really restricted to the ateliers of the top designers and housewives that had their own clientèle and niche upper market."
"I wanted to figure out what Indian women would and could wear and the corset was my choice. It suits the Indian woman who is accustomed to wearing a tight choli and it suits the modern Indian gal that wants to wear fusion East-West with a touch of ethnic nuance," says Lascelles.

Fashion Faux Pas
- Platform shoes. Especially the heavier and glitz one.
- Being overdone with too too much.
- Jewellery (its meant to complement your attire not take away from your personality)
- make-up (highlight one feature don't sparkle like a X-mas tree)
- bling bling (heavy saris, heavy shoes, heavy bags all together spell a fashion no no)
