Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week

WLIFW's Inspired New Designers

From the routine Hi-5 initiative where FDCI introduces five new designers at every fashion week, 10 of them were introduced onto the fashion week bandwagon this time round. Here's a look at what they had on offer.

As the haute monde of Indian celebrity hood wonder what was new about the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week (WLIFW) this time, we have news for you. There was the 'tacky' venue for a start, and then there were newcomers absolutely basking in the fashion week glory.

To most it might not make sense in having two fashion mega-events back-to-back. But this trend is giving novices a chance to participate in the biggest fashion extravaganza of the country.
The WLIFW turned 10 this year and the Hi-5 initiative of the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) was doubled up to include 10 new designers. With attention being divided over two fashion shows and bigger designers like Manish Arora, Anamika Khanna and Rajesh Pratap Singh readying for the Paris Fashion Week more newcomers were added to the fashion week held at Pragati Maidan in Delhi.

Rathi Vinay Jha, Director General, FDCI says, "I think we have given (the designers) an excellent platform. Ten new designers have been chosen. We feel there had been a lot of promise and talent in them."
Although most of them were given the earlier part of the day to display their talent, they made their point. The inspiration for them still belongs to art and literature but they are a welcome addition.

Dubai-based designer duo Meher-Ridhima of the brand Affascinare had Indian models sashaying their stuff on the ramp. Inspired by the 19th century Russian painter Kandisky, their show was dominated by the colour of the season - White.

Basic lines in ivory with splashes of colour for the summer-spring feel came through in their collection. Titled Kandisky's On White, the collection displayed voluminous silhouettes with box pleats and balloon hemlines. Cotton, chiffon and organza with the elegance of silk made their collection attractive and laid-back.

Delhi-based debutante Drashta Sarvaiya offered a bold collection inspired by Charles Dickens' novel Great Expectations. The lead character of Great Expectations is a painter, so the designer had a series of paintings illustrated on the fabrics in bright colours including parrot green, Prussian red and purples. While the novel might be a tad bleak, the collection was funky and colourful.

Titled ' Paradiso Fondare' (meaning paradise found), the designer presented a vibrant collection where lively colours juxtaposed with passionate silhouettes to depict a paradise found in all sincerity. Ranging between Rs. 3000 to Rs. 10,000, she said her clothes are meant for the 'young at heart' and are easily affordable. She wants to be a global brand soon and is looking out for buyers from the Europe and the Middle East.

Another arty inspiration was Varun Sardana's collection. Titled 'Grammar Of Seeing', his designs came from the philosophy of Austrian painter and architect Hundertwasser. The collection had silhouettes and embellishments that spelt alternate looks and an audacious foresight.

Then there was the romantic newcomer Abhijeet Khanna, whose collection Risa had Indian techniques of hand embroidery and block prints with Western silhouettes and palette. He brought the wilderness to the floor with his oriental collection and he is sure of why he is here. When asked what he thinks he would be doing five years down the line, he said, "It's a long time. I guess I would be here only, designing clothes."

What stood out for the new designers was the riot of colours along with the graceful silhouettes that left most viewers wowing the budding designers. Attractive and feminine, their clothes are ready for the reckoning. It's another fresh start for Indian fashion.
