Lecoanet Hemant 2008 (Since 1981)
|
The 2008 season marks an important leap forward for Lecoanet Hemant with the opening of their new World Headquarters in India. Their premise in Infocity, Gurgaon, in the outskirts of New Delhi, realizes a futuristic vision of how a traditional Parisian Couture House meets cutting edge semi-industrial high tech production.
The move to India was seeded in the early days of the new millennium, when Didier Lecoanet and Hemant Sagar recognized that the growth of a new fashion brand would be compromised in Europe. They felt that their Haute Couture years in Paris were better regarded as a unique 'schooling period' that would be the spring board to setting up a new industrial Couture line they named Prêt-à-Couture.
Didier Lecoanet from the cold and rainy Champagne region of Eastern France was attracted by all things colourful and exotic.... and Hemant from Delhi and Berlin, for whom the height of exoticism were flannels, just as grey as the weather in Europe. They started making clothes together on a kitchen table with a borrowed sewing machine at night, while both were in the process of learning draping and cutting by day.
Out of school their first stints were freelance assignments, designing collections for manufacturers in France and Germany while traveling through India. The influence of India is undeniable though subtle, in all of their work from Day One.
LH creations are on display at museums such as London's Victoria and Albert, The Mikimoto Museum in Honshu, Japan and the Ariana in Geneva, Galleria Museum of fashion Paris, Oltio state Museum, Postal museum Paris. Among the most famous personalities they have dressed are: Ahem... Barbie, in the permanent Mattel Collection as well as (yes!) Snoopy... and his sister Belle.
They dressed the Statue of Liberty in an exhibition dedicated to Freedom for the bicentennial of the Eiffel Tower at the Musee de Arts Decoratifs in Paris in the early nineties and have made dresses out of chocolate for the "Salon du Chocolate" in Paris, Tokyo and New York. Their versions of "The Designer Christmas Tree" in the Cartier Exhibition in Paris are exhibited yearly and their works have appeared in worldwide press and book publications. Lecoanet-Hemant won the prestigious 'Golden Thimble Prize' for their 1994 Spring Summer Collection. Many of their designs, such as their special couture creations for Barbie, have become collector's items.
In the last few seasons LH have also started operations in India, are present in some ten shops in the nation today and are planning a flagship store most probably in New Delhi. Their men's collection called "LH Man" was introduced to accolades at the Bangalore
Men's Fashion Week in 2006 & Miami Fashion Week where they were chosen as
"Designer of the year 2007".
Now that LH is properly established in India, the international orientation shall continue, they made their official entry into the Indian market with their local Solo-Shows in Lakme Fashion Week held in Bombay October 2007, followed by Delhi Fashion week in March 2008. Their intention is to become an Asian Luxury Brand coming out of India.
