Is it goodbye to minis, halters and noodle straps after marriage?
The new-age bahus answer
Caroline Rodrigues (27) who is also a working mom said, "Wearing a short skirt is not a problem with me after marriage. I have been brought up in a liberal family. I believe that a person has his own individuality and style that cannot change after marriage. My husband and in-laws do not interfere with my dressing sense because they know me very well and have full faith that I would not dress up in a vulgar outfit. I wear short skirts even now and I can carry it off decently."
However, the majority of women in India stop wearing short and tight tees or mini skirts post marriage. Some change their style due to demands from in-laws and some do so because of their own mental conditioning. And for that matter fashion is not just wearing noodle strap tops and mini skirts, say some young bahus. You can be stylish in a sari and a trendy salwar kameez.
Rajeshwari Mishra (25), an IT engineer and ready to get married in July 2006, says, "I will live with my in-laws and so I would prefer not to wear jeans and skirts as it is not proper. It is my duty to see that the family values are respected and my husband or mother-in law does not face some embarrassing situation for me. However, when I visit my parent's place, I will surely freak out with my friends in jeans and tees."
Similarly, Ishika Banerjee (28) who is a housewife says, "I feel more mature now. Those 'girlish trends' are meant only for the young college goers. That phase is over for me. Moreover, what will people think! We still live in a traditional and conventional society. I don't want people to start gossiping about me behind my back."
Deepak Gupta (28), who is a journalist and has married recently said, "I want everyone to envy me because of my wife but that does not mean she will have to wear indecent clothes in public or sport a tattoo. These invite false trouble like sexual harassment and eve teasing. I don't want to shatter the happiness of my married life with these. Moreover my parents and social circle would also not appreciate such things."
Like they say to each his own.
