Gauri & Nainika - Designers With Grace
|
Gauri & Nainika Karan launched their label Gauri & Nainika in January 2002 in New Delhi. A ready-to-wear brand of western wear ranging from semi-formal styles to high-end demi-couture ones, the label offers glamorous, elegant and chic clothing for women at competitive prices. With a design philosophy that is distinctly feminine and refined, their collections are being retailed all over the country at various outlets and exclusive boutiques.
Their Philosophy
Inspired by anything beautiful, from European fashion history, art, music, books, personalities, theatre, Hollywood and red carpet glamour to pictures of their mother from the 70s, the brand has always had an extremely feminine and romantic design philosophy with styles that are luxurious yet understated.
With a strong emphasis on fabric, cut & colour, the designs are all about shape and flattering silhouettes. By combining tailoring with drapery, the garments are meticulously crafted and have a timeless appeal where old world charm, fantasy and elegance are brought bang up to date. Femininity forms the essence of the label with styles that signify youth, glamour and sophistication.
Their Client
The label Gauri & Nainika caters to a very distinct client - one who likes to dress with a sense of occasion and is always at the forefront of fashion. The styles are for a self-determining woman who is modern, chic, loves fashion for its magnificence and spectacular nature and pours her entire personality into her clothes.
The Designers
Gauri & Nainika Karan (b. 1978, 79) grew up in New Delhi. Though originally students of economics, they always found fashion extremely fascinating. After studying at The National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT, New Delhi), they launched their ready-to-wear label Gauri & Nainika.
They grew up inspired by the classics and the gloriously romantic look of old Hollywood heroines to whom glamour truly belongs... actors such as Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly and Hedy Lamarr whose timeless elegance has been incorporated in their designs.
The Fall 08 WLIFW Collection
Someone once said, "A Paris dress makes one feel capable of charming a pearl out of an oyster...." Shouldn't every woman get to feel like that at some point? This is precisely what the designers had in mind for the Fall 08 collection. The intention was to create dresses that change the way a woman feels by breaking away from the accepted mould of dreary practical clothing.
The collection symbolises the obvious return to curve-celebrating, body-con styles. Working in the moment, without any one inspiration in particular, this line is for women who love to look powerfully and unapologetically feminine. For women who aren't shying away from dressing up, looking attractive, more soignée, more self-assured. And it's not just about the clothes. It's about having a personality to match your wardrobe. About rejoicing in your gender.
The rustle of silk, the opulence of velvet, the sensual feel of satin and the romantic weightlessness of tulle and lace are all elements that come together to form this collection. Set in a vibrant colour palette ranging from acid green, magenta, blood red and blush pink to classic black and white, the collection embodies timeless modern glamour and is most certainly not for the faint-hearted.
The show opened with lady-like dresses in soft merino wool and tweed constructed in subtle, pared-down cuts for the demure, more understated customer. Moving on, plush duchesse satin was folded, pleated, darted, draped, bunched-up and ballooned in strong silhouettes lending a sculptural look to the collection. Rich black velvet bands cut through the entire line giving it a sharp and tailored edge. Golden and scarlet roses delicately woven into wispy black tulle brings an element of fairy-tale fantasy to dresses in sweepingly feminine cuts. The show concluded with a series of lavish romantic gowns for those who dare to step into Cinderella's glass slippers for one evening.
