Fashion Choreographers
Silent Workers Of The Fashion World
|
They present, they highlight. But they go missing from the limelight!
A fashion show is like a film poster. Just as a poster gives glimpses of a film, a show conveys the essence of a collection in a nutshell. A good show can create a buzz for the most mundane range of clothes. And a sloppy ramp affair can mar the fate of a perfectly good line.
The unspoken heroes behind a chic presentation are the fashion choreographers who create an entire mood, an ambience for each collection.
"Fashion choreography takes into account almost every aspect of presentation right from styling and draping of the clothes and use of accessories to the catwalk, the time span of a show, the music and the lighting," says fashion choreographer Alison who has choreographed for designer duos Shantanu and Nikhil Mehra(View Collection)and Falguni and Shane Peacock. (View Collection)"A choreographer has to have a good sense of styling and dressing so that he or she can highlight the clothes," says Alison. Ramp choreographers need to understand music and fashion as much as body language and attitude because they need to give the model her alluring look.
"Choreographers work really hard with us and it's a tiring job", believes model Carol Gracias (Read Interview).
They need to teach the models how to walk to the rhythm of the music and look appealing. "Solo ramp walking, one model walking at a time, making eye contact with the audience is also the in thing in catwalk right now. When models gaze at guests, it helps to involve them in the show," explains Asha Kochhar, the choreographer for Ashish Pandey and designer duo Swapan and Seema.
Choreographers say music is perhaps the most important ingredient of a fashion show, secondary only to the clothes. "Music is the soul of a fashion show; I keep the collection, the inspiration, the fabric, everything in mind while deciding on the music," says Alison.
Alison explains, "Like Shantanu and Nikhil's collection was feminine so I went with house or soft music to go with the collection, whereas for Falguni and Shane's vibrant collection I used percussions and techno."
Choreographers slog it out rehearsing with models, taking briefs from the designers, coordinating the music and the lights. But their names seem to be missing amidst all the glitz. Models walk the ramp, designers have admirations to their credit, but people never get to know the hand behind the stunning staging.
Alison doesn't agree, "I don't think it's a thankless or a nameless job. At the end of the day, if my show goes well, that's rewarding enough for me! Those five seconds of fame and acknowledgement don't really make a difference to me."
Kochhar holds a different view; "International designers have Look Books where they mention the name of the choreographer. Indian designers are also picking up the trend. As long as our name is taken at the end of the show or in the press releases, it's fine with us."
Fashion choreographers do everything from lighting to music to dramatization! Model and former Miss India Neha Kapur is generous with her kudos, "Choreographers' names should be put up in big letters underneath the designer's name. They deserve it, they should be called the Show Directors!"
Sadly and strangely, they don't get sufficient media attention because they are the technicians of a movie that nobody really knows about. Somebody needs to remind the fashion industry that a movie has a credit roll at the end to acknowledge the technicians' efforts and like any other artist fashion choreographers deserve the right plaudits.
