A Glossary Every Bride Must Have!

Choli
A type of blouse that is worn with a ghagara, lehenga, or saree. A choli can be long or short. Cholis come in different types and styles. The more traditional ones typically have sleeves and tie at the back. You can have sleeveless, backless, and halter neck cholis too.
Chudidaar
A type of bottom worn with a kurta. It is fitted like tights and is much longer than the length of your legs. The extra length of material gets bunched at the ankles forming pleats, the traditional name for which is chudis.
Chunni
A piece of long scarf like cloth that is worn with Indian garments such as salwar kameez and lehenga. A chunni with a salwar kameez is generally 2 1/2 metres long and longer yet with a lehenga.
Corset
A kind of top that is absolutely fitted and does not have any sleeves. Could be long till your waist, or short like a bustier. Corsets were not traditionally worn with Indian garments, but are now being teamed with lehengas and saris for a trendy look.
Dhoti
A piece of long uncut cloth that is tied around the waist and goes between the legs, ending up looking like a flared trouser. It was traditionally worn only by Indian men, but today women are wearing dhotis too.
Dupatta
Another name for Chunni.
Ghagara
A floor-length long flowing skirt that is one part of a two-part ensemble. It is typically worn with a choli. A chunni can be added to the ensemble if desired.
Jodhpuri
A traditional Indian jacket with a high Chinese collar neck. This is another garment that was typically worn by Indian men but is now being worn by women too.
Kurta
A long top worn with trousers known as salwar or chudidar.
Kurti
A shorter version of a kurta.
Lehenga
Same as ghagara. Lehengas come in different cuts and styles, some of which are discussed later.
Lungi
A type of bottom that is traditionally worn by South Indian men. But after Kajol made it famous in Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge women fancy this garment too.
