Fine fabrics...
Slippery satins, decorated brocades, feathery lace, silks, crisp cottons and linens - traditionally adorn the brides till today. The bridal dress is always made of the finest fabrics. Demand of silk for wedding dresses reaches unprecedented levels. Around 2640 BC a young empress in China was seated under the mulberry tree enjoying a cup a tea when a moth's cocoon fell into her tea. The tea's warmth unraveled the moth's delicate filaments and revealed the first threads of silk. This fibre transformed the world. The Chinese exported raw silk thread and cloth to the west as soon as the first merchants traversed the silk root- six thousand miles over Desert Island and across a sea between Far east and Greece. By the second century AD it was worth its weight in pound.
Satin with its lustrous sheen is another fabric that is very impressive. It is made from silk and its tightness, weight and brilliance makes it a popular bridal fabric. Charmeuse - a rich, lightweight and very soft satin woven from silk and rayon is a sophisticated choice for bridal wears. Then is taffeta, woven again from silk is popular since ages and with its smooth fine surface, crisp look and gentle rustling sound makes an ideal fabric. Then silk chiffon is a favourite for spring and summer day bridal dresses. Organza, heavier than chiffon makes for a formal bridal dress. Another excellent choice is organdy, which is more sculpted than chiffon. Brides also prefer exquisite linen and cotton fabrics especially if they are getting married in summer.
And then the brides could never think of exchanging vows without a touch of the most ethereal fabric - lace. Steeped in tradition it is said that - a romantic Belgium Knight left a rose for his lady as a token of his love. As time passed the rose blossomed and petals started falling.
To preserve this gift of love the lady tenderly sewed the petals back into the rose one by one. Eventually there was no rose but a delicate lace remained and thus this fabric was created.
Colour...
The western bride always wears white - considered the most appropriate bridal hue. Sometimes splashed with color - the main idea behind every aspect of a wedding gown is to enhance the beauty of its wearer. The colour of the dress ranges from classic bright white to pearly white, almost blue white to soft pastels and ivory shades. To add colour to the dress the neckline may be of different shaded flowers or gold embroidered lace.
Bridal Veil...
People view the bridal veil as the perfect symbol of feminine purity. It was primarily worn to protect the bride from evil spirits. In some cultures it was to hide the brides face as a matter of subjugation. It is cut from fine net and the diaphanous texture makes it very romantic. The veil has to be in proportion to the dress. The cathedral veil, the birds cage veil or the chapel length veil - this is an integral part of a bridal ensemble. The most popular is the veil that reaches the brides fingertips and this goes well with any gown. The headpieces are worn with the veil as an extra touch to the bride's regalia. They are usually floral made of pearls and silk flowers.
The Must-haves...
Brides splurge on their lingerie. It is essential to the final harmony of the bridal gown. A hidden factor that helps flaunt the bridal dress to perfection.
Weddings are made in heaven and to commemorate this occasion - a trousseau is essential - a possession every couple wants to flaunt.
