Gaia By Asmita Marwa
|
Gaia - An Awakening: Gaia is the interconnected world of which we are all a part; from the living biosphere that sustains us to the emerging revolution of environmental, social and spiritual awareness.
For the Fall/Winter 2008 collection, Asmita has tried to revive this Age Old Heritage Craft by working with master craftsmen and artistes thus recreating the splendour of an ancient era. Her designs resurrect patterns and skills of ancient arts into the rhythm of modern life, keeping the accent always on comfort, grace, simplicity and elegance.
Quilted jackets with motifs, trapeze dresses to long flowing kurtas with structured and relaxed silhouettes, the range presents a subdued colour palette range from indigo blue, iron black, madder red, beige to olive green with splashes of bright pink adding a streak of drama. Using only vegetable dyes and natural fabrics the "Gaia" ensemble is Asmita's homage to Nature and Mother Earth.
About Kalamkari
The origin of Kalamkari is from Sri Kalahasti and Machilipatnam, Andhra Pradesh. The name Kalamkari translates as pen (kalam) work (kari) in Hindi/Urdu. Kalamkari refers to a method of painting natural dyes onto cotton or silk fabric with a bamboo pen and is synonymous with both painted and hand block printed textiles that incorporate natural vegetable dyes.
In the 17th century Kalamkari was exported to Iran, Siam, Burma, the Persian Gulf, Maldives and Malacca. It saw immense popularity in eighteenth century Europe, the fabric being used as draperies and bedspreads. European merchants also had names for this type of fabric decoration: the Portugese called it 'Pintado', the Dutch used the name 'Sitz' and the British preferred 'Chintz'.
Kalamkari floral, vegetable and animal designs were in great demand, in particular the motif known as the 'Tree of Life'. It was a great favourite with the Dutch, who made dresses, skirts and jackets out of Kalamkari and also used the fabric as large wall hangings. The themes of Kalamkari fabrics are traditionally chosen from the Puranas and the Epics; and the love stories of Radha and Krishna form an integral part of their designs.
