Day Three at the first Accessory Show at Lakme Fashion Week Oct 2009 showcased imagination at its zenith. Presenting their collections were Little Shilpa, Abdul Tawwab (men's shoes), bags by Malini Agarwala for Malaga and accessories by designers Priyanka, Malini and Hersh for the label Stoffa.
Little Shilpa is certainly a lady of many hats... and true to imagination her creativity unveiled one of the most unusual collections in India. The museum like collection started with an eccentric hat shaped like a rock formed almost like a mathematical algorithm. There were hats shaped like fans, larger than life plumes, decorative CDs and feathers giving an eccentricity and elusive "reel"ality to the show.
Was art imitating life or vice-versa? We will have to catch up with Shilpa on that. The show stopper would definitely be the hat formed like a Christmas tree with lights and all. The designer used objects de jour and her keen sense of observation to present a satirical perspective on fashion perhaps and the changes in our society as we step up technical advancements. Paradoxically, the hats were made of basic items like felt, fabric, wire, feathers, crochet lace, ribbons and plastic.

Malini Agarwala's designer label Malaga didn't disappoint with her range of clutches and be-jewelled bags shaped like chests of treasure. Colours were vibrant, reminiscent of Faberge and Swarovski elements in canary, oyster, turquoise, deep pewters and metallics meshed with crystals.
There was leather crafted in classic and modern shapes. Clutches and draw-string duffels were showcased in a variety of hues. Her Art Deco and Vintage lines carried a retro-theme reminiscent of the 1920s in Europe and the revival of the luxurious Mughal Era. Decorative nuances included semi-precious stones like agate, carnelian, turquoise and jasper on the matching bag and belt sets as well as the spray of swarovski crystals on the under arm slings and clutches.

The music churned Elvis Presley's "Blue Suede Shoes" as an emerging generation of male hunks took to the ramp in their Albas designed by esteemed Cobbler and Designer Abdul Tawwab. One of the few designers in India that caters to only men's shoes Tawwab's shoes are increasingly in demand in Europe and the Far-East. "Yes, I believe the crafts people in India can compete with the Italian shoe manufacturing workshops which have traditionally been some of the best in the world," said Tawwab. The Delhi based designer feels, "Men are spending more money on themselves and especially on luxury accessories like their shoes." His range of shoes included the sporty, day and formal styles. Shapes were elongated and pointed, adding a retro 60s feel to a contemporary and modern collection. Shoes were leather and a mix of canvas and leather with colours in the muted beiges, deep burgundies, browns and coal.

Priyanka, Malini and Hersh's label Stoffa celebrated the seventies, eighties and nineties. Bee Gee songs provided the backdrop as models sashayed to the music and displayed funky, modern and classic sandals. The collection boasted of metallic in gold and silver with chunks of crystals and swatches of canvas and leather. There were little sling bags embedded with crystals, clutches, and over-sized soft duffels. The mood was flirty and modern. The collection displayed a return to whimsy and softness splashed with monochromatic colours in bright pink, yellow, and turquoise. Some of show stoppers included the flat Grecian sandal with ankles tie-ups, gold wedge slip-ons reminiscent of the popular Candy Shoes of the seventies, and soft moccasin type flats in gold.

For women this year its looks like designer consensus favours gold, silver and pewter. Perennials of crystal and coloured stones were placed for drama, and spurts of colour percolated from palettes of oyster, pewter, gold, silver and coal in bright yellow, turquoise, purple, fuschia and celery.
