7 Tips For Caring For Your Footwear This Monsoon

Payal Kothari When raindrops pitter-patter on the windowpane and rainbows peak out from behind clouds it may be all nice and sweet. However, when the same rainwater from dirty puddles seeps into your newest pair of shoes things may not be quite so hunky dory.

Accessory Designer Payal Kothari comes up with seven handy tips to getting your shoes through the monsoons.

Leather shoes Don't wear leather: P.U. Shoes (Polyurethane) which are non-leather and more of the plastic kind generally are more durable than leather as they can withstand the moisture of the monsoons. Gum Boots are quite fashionable during the rainy season and they now come in a whole range of pastel shades and not just the traditional black colour.

Rubber sole shoe

Wear rubber soles: Choose a rubber sole with enough grooves since that help to have a better grip. Discard the shoe when the sole has worn out.

Platform heals
Wear platforms: Platforms come with a natural lift in the front and also the benefit of high heels. Thereby your feet keep a distance from the ground and don't get mucky. Also wear an open shoe so that the water has an outlet to seep out.

Don't wear socks: Wet socks retain moisture and not only damage the feet but spoil the shoes too.

Clean both your feet and shoes: Your feet need to be cleaned more often than your shoes do. Wet and sticky feet can give rise to monsoon foot diseases like the Bunion and Ringworm. Shoes need to be cleaned to free them of dirt and germs. Never clean shoes with water and detergent. Just gently wipe it with protective shoe sprays available at shoe stores.

Air out your shoes: When shoes get wet don't throw your shoes under the bed but put them on a shoe rack in a well-aired space. Don't dry them next to the window if you live in a humid zone. Use a hairdryer on low heat or fan to dry them.

Don't repeat your shoes: Don't wear the same shoe over and over again as it will damage the shoe and it won't get time to air out. Alternate the shoes you wear.
