Designs on you
Bollywood comes calling...
 The mother-daughter duo is leaving a mark all over the world. Currently a raging fad in the West, pop icons like Madonna have elevated mehndi to cult status. The Michael Jackson troupe members embellished themselves with her henna-tattoos when they were in India. And so did Hollywood hottie, Demi Moore. Talking about this an excited Ekta says, "The irony of this being that both mom and me were at the YPO (Young Presidents Org) function in the US to teach mehndi. Demi was there as well. She saw the mehndi on my hand and stopped to inquire about it. She was with Amitabh Bachchan. Both mom and I were so busy looking at Mr AB that we didn't even notice her. Moreover, I didn't recognize her. When she inquired I told her to get in touch with us if she wanted to her hands designed! Of course she did call us to her room and that's when we realized who she was. She opted for a traditional paisley design. She was so happy with the result that she was very careful as to not spoil it when the design was wet."
Mehndi facts
The use of mehndi as a cosmetic dates back 5000 years, as may be seen from henna-stained hair and red tinted nails of the mummies in the pyramids of the Pharaohs. But the practice became prevalent in India around the 12th century AD when the Muslims introduced the art to our country.
The Rajputs in particular started applying mehndi extensively. Mehndi comes into its own during marriages and the bride has her hands and feet adorned with intricate mehndi designs. |
Her happiest moment in her career was when she applied mehndi on Kajol's hands for her wedding. "Kajol was so thrilled with the result that after I finished she began dancing saying it was her dream to have her hands with bridal henna. Another happy moment was when I went to Delhi to do Karisma's mehndi for her first Karva Chauth. As the event was very big it was almost like her wedding. My latest design was for Riddhima where I did a completely new design as she did not want any design from my album. She wanted peacocks, paisleys and flowers. Both Ekta and me did one hand each."
Some of her other clients include Ayesha Jackie Shroff, Manna Suniel Shetty, Padmini Kolhapure.
It takes her almost 4 hours (with 3 helpers) to do a bridal mehndi. She also has many designs for temporary mehndi which is used at pre-wedding events. These are designs in nail polish, zardosi, glitter, stone work, etc. And they match the outfit.
Trends for 2006:
Traditional design. Paisleys and peacocks are evergreen and traditional designs are back this year.
