Glass bangles are a rage this season
|
Shaaditimes very own fashion expert Amy Billmoria agrees and disagrees. According to Amy, "Glass bangles really are not in fashion especially in urban India for the upper-middle class woman or the socialites." She feels, "If you ask me nine out of ten Indian women would opt for a different type of bracelet / bangle if given the opportunity." She continues, "Today the options are plentiful as opposed to even a decade earlier where glass bangles were the option for India's version of artificial decorative pieces. Today we have so many choices sometimes glitzy...to plain flat nickel metals, silver (a current rage). Glamour associated with wearing glass bangles in the past is today shifted to these metals and not only are they copying the tradition, but improving upon it. Today you find bangles in square shapes, different breadths and chunks,self-embossed, carved, or embellished with anything from sequences, sparkles, appliques."
Amy Billmoria's Glass Bangle Tips
Traditional Woman
The traditional woman exudes her aura which includes glass bangles. That is a given. If she wants to flatter the already existing fashion she can opt for different shapes of the bangle versus circular. She should also pay attention to other little details like embossing, gossamer opaque finishes, and vibrant colours. Regular colours like red, blue, green look absolutely fantastic with diamond, gold, lacque bangles as glass itself is a watery spectrum. To create a different yet subtle look you might want to try visiting the local markets (in Mumbai Santa Cruz, Bubleshewar, in Delhi-the famous Bengali Market) to explore colours and textures.
Modern Woman
For the modern woman scoops of bangles held together with coloured strings looks simply delicious. Scoop up the bangles in brights, stripes and patterns. Just match and contrast together and create your own mixed bag of twizzles, hues, and grains. You may want to string them together with colourful strings topped with charms, tassles, sequence ribbons as danglers.
If you want a mysterious, Egyptian look you may want to purchase the larger size bangles and wear them as arm bands. Worn with a gold toned arm-band the look is reflective of the Santhal rural look and modern day Venetian Greek goddess. This would be my choice for creating the current Diva flair!

Where to find them
The bangles hail from the rural communities of Gazipur, Nawabganj, Lalbagh and Azimpur. The wholesalers there sell these in a number of shops opposite a mosque in Chawkbazaar in addition to imported bangles from Pakistan and India. Today due to increase in demand for glass baubles and bangles from India in the international market special designs are sourced through main fashion hubs such as Mumbai and Delhi.
