"Seema's Sky" is a translation of Prakash Trivedi's Gujrati novel "Seemanu Aakash". It has been specially translated by Ashok Dholabhai for shaaditimes. It is a love story and more.
The staircase was dimly lit. This was better because no one could see Nikhil easily. Besides, since he was wearing sports shoes he was able to walk silently and would therefore not attract attention.
Four, five, six, ten floors one after another. After a few floors his hand and feet got so used to this that they started moving mechanically. His brain, now freed, jumped to the 28th floor.
What about Seema?
It now struck Nikhil what a mistake he had made. Instead of going down he should have climbed one flight of stairs so that he could have alerted Seema and others. Now it was too late to go up to the 28th floor. On the other hand his mind defended his action. Was it his duty to Seema to endanger his life once again and rush to her rescue? Would any New Yorker do such a good Samaritan act?
Seema! What relationship did he have with her? Was she not seeing Mark? Was she not playing footsie at lunch in the World Trade Centre?
Was she not acting as she pleased every time establishing her superiority over others? Why should he worry about her?
His legs moved on automatically. Was Seema really competing with him? Was she trying to belittle him? Was she arousing jealousy in him? Or was it all just in his mind?
Be that as it may, his immediate aim was to go down the remaining 17 floors without thinking about his duty, woman power or about rescuing innocents.
It was impossible to know anything till he reached the lobby on the ground floor and yet his eyes detected flashes of light behind the lobby doors on each floor. Probably the police had alerted people in the entire building in this way.
Nikhil's mind was focused on reaching the ground floor, like a man jumping from a plane who waits for his parachute to open.
It was full five minutes before Nikhil reached the ground floor. Through a small grilled window in the lobby door he could see a lot of commotion outside. There were a lot of policemen all around vainly trying to control the crowd. The elevators had started working and were bringing loads and loads of people from the upper floors to the ground floor, choking the lobby and adding to the confusion.
This was to Nikhil's advantage. He had merely to open the door and melt into the crowd. His feverish body, his sweat-soaked clothes and his fear struck face would not draw attention. It took him no time to mix with the crowd but the crowd was not dispersing since the police were waiting to record everyone's statements.
Nikhil was still debating within himself what to say and what to omit when he felt two arms going round his neck almost choking him. Two fair arms encircled him from behind trying to hold him in a tight embrace. Nikhil heard Seema's warm, moist breath in his ear. "Thank God! Mozel toff!"
