The first truck soon overtook Nikhil's car. Had it been during daylight he would never have allowed this but tonight on this mountain road with sharp bends he was too sleepy and exhausted to speed up. Suddenly a very bright beam of light got reflected in Nikhil's rear-view mirror blinding him. Taking advantage of this the second truck too overtook him and the third one pressing ahead was now neck-to-neck with his Beetle. Nikhil's car was now like a deer trapped among three bounding lions.

The procession of Nikhil's Beetle surrounded by the three trucks reminded him of an occasion when he was travelling with some friends and at the turnpike one of them asked him jokingly, "What does one do when a 300 kilo gorilla wants to sit? Or lie down?" He could not think of a reply and the friend said, "You simply allow him to do whatever he wants. He wants to sit, its OK. To lie down, that’s OK too." So it was with these 60 to 70 ton trucks you just let them overtake you to stop in the middle of the road.
Looking from afar, it seemed like a procession. Had a few friends been with Nikhil, he could have imagined his marriage procession on a red horse and three elephants. But here, Nikhil's car was boxed in by the trucks, by the mountain on one side and a deep valley on the other. He had to be very alert because even a bit of carelessness on his part would have disastrous results. The truck drivers seemed bent on testing his driving skills.
The cavalcade moved on for another 15 miles. Nikhil's jalopy could neither overtake the trucks nor fall back. At last tired of harassing him the trucks moved on, honking their klaxons as if in ridicule. When, on the Pen turnpike’s serpentine roads, in the deep darkness of the mid night, going on at fifty miles, they left after providing a deep life experience, Nikhil sighed in relief and gratefulness.
In the distance he could see the twinkling lights of Harrisburg.
