"Seema's Sky" is a translation of Prakash Trivedi's Gujrati novel "Seemanu Aakash". It has been specially translated by Ashok Dholabhai for shaaditimes. It is a love story and more.
Deep in thoughts of Lisa, Nikhil forgot to stop at the coffee shop on the way. It would have been better if I had a coffee, he thought. He had still to go another 250 miles. The thoughts of ghosts transformed the atmosphere. He imagined all sorts of noises coming in even through the closed windows of his car. He could see shafts of light shining through the dense foliage of the trees in the forest. The sky seemed to be caving in under the weight of the stars. The Pennsylvania jungle seemed to have become the most uninhabited place on earth.

Cold and lonely, Nikhil continued to drive like a robot. God forbid if the car broke down or its battery failed all the evil forces of nature would descend on him, he felt. The curving mountain road stretched endlessly. His Beetle really looked like a beetle moving on a curving tendril. The climb was getting steeper. Nikhil was finding it more and more difficult to keep his eyes open. As a result the car was losing speed.
Nikhil's rear-view mirror reflected a ray of light. This gave him the excuse of glancing at the mirror from time to time. The light was getting brighter and brighter.Or was it some Lisa carrying a lantern riding a broom? Nikhil was amused by these fancies.
The approaching shaft of light increased from one to two and from two to four. Gradually the roar of the truck following him grew louder. In this lonely, silent place even the roar sounded like music to Nikhil's ears.
On the steep road the truck started inching ahead trying to overtake Nikhil's small Beetle. Huffing like a tired heavy weight boxer in the final round of bout and belching dark smoke the truck seemed to be breathing heavily down Nikhil's neck. Another truck, like Mohammed Ali going after Joe Fraiser, was close behind and a third one followed all like punch-drunk boxers with a referee in tow.
