Seema's Sky - Prakash Trivedi
Part 2

"Seema's Sky" is a translation of Prakash Trivedi's Gujrati novel "Seemanu Aakash". It has been specially translated by Ashok Dholabhai for shaaditimes. It is a love story and more.

Seema's Sky Nikhil was used to such experiences in Nadiad. It was well-known that ghosts of the God Mahadev dwell on a peepul tree on the banks of the Santram river. They appeared to the fortunate ones. One full-moon night Nikhil and few friends secretly went to the riverside telling others that they were going to a movie. On a bet, he and another boy braver than the rest, climbed the tree. During the day time, one of them had tied a cloth bundle on one of the branches. Several birds startled from their sleep, fluttered here and there screeching agitatedly. One of the boys frightened by this disturbance fell off the tree, whereas the other took the cloth bundle and came down.

Once in Nadiad, Nikhil and few of his friends had gone to an old house to spend a night there. It was said that on Navratri night, one could watch the procession of the Mother Goddess pass in the sky. He wanted to see this.

He awoke with a start at 2.30 in the morning and felt a beautiful fragrance fill the terrace and permeate the whole atmosphere. It was well known that this happened when the Mother Goddess passed in her procession. There was silence all around except for the sound of snoring. In spite of a keen desire to open his eyes, Nikhil felt a veil of fear cloud his eyes. He missed seeing the procession.

Such incidents continued to occur in Nadiad, leading people to believe in the existence of ghosts and divine beings.

After coming to Mumbai all talk of ghosts was forgotten. But today in far away America all these experiences came back to him here at the turnpike in Pennsylvania. Could it be that this figure, a symbol of the 19th Century appearing and re-appearing was showing him the way to New York of the 20th Century and the maturity?
