As he retrieved his mail he thought about his secretary, Faye. She was 40, looked 27, was golden haired and likeable. He found he could talk freely with her especially so after he had met her 18-year-old daughter Kate and her balding husband John. Nikhil had not told anyone except Fay about his trip to New York. He just had to confide in somebody.

| If no one had taken notice of my leaving on time why would they appreciate my working an hour more everyday? |

When he started out at 4:45 Faye came in to advice him, "Take care of yourself. All of us want you back in one piece." Nikhil thanked her but could not bring himself to ask her if he could get her something from New York. Maybe she would have asked for something or have told him that his coming back in one piece would be enough for her. Though Faye in no way resembled his mother, back in Nadiad he did not know why she reminded him of her, unconsciously attributing to her his mother's thoughts and words.
The telephone started ringing as he came in with the mail. It was already 5:15 and he had to cover over 500 miles in 10 to 12 hours. He was in two minds about answering the phone, but its insistent jangling forced him to pick it up.
"Hello!" he said in a bored voice hoping to cut the conversation short. "Hi, Nikhil! Haven't you started yet? How, then will you reach here in time? Are you or are you not coming?" His maternal uncle's voice boomed from across the long distance from New York. It doesn't matter if you are not coming. Speaking to you is consolation enough. Anyway after coming to America one has to learn to break off sentimental relationships."
"Mama*, have you already arrived?" Nikhil could just break into the flow of words.
"I arrived quite some time back, but it is just like you to forget about me. I did not expect you to receive me at the airport but you could have at least phoned to enquire about my well-being. I hope you do have a telephone." Mama was good at sarcasm.
Nikhil respectfully replied," Mama, I am very sorry. I am in a new job and it is impossible to get leave. I had written about this to you, remember!"
