It's your life - Part I
|
One fine day the doctor checked him and declared, "Now you are ready to get back to work."
"Fine enough to get married?" Akshay asked.
"Oh ya...yes...why not?" The good doctor spluttered. His patient was a sixty year-old and although not very sick, right now, he was not what one would call a very healthy man. His heart was weak. Only one of the kidneys was functional and his asthma was a constant companion. No woman in her right mind would marry such a man. On the other hand, the doctor remembered, this unfit man was a multi-millionaire. This put the entire situation in a new light.
"Congratulations. Now you won't need Ishani, my favourite nurse." At last the Doctor managed to smile.
"Young man, mind your language. That nurse is going to be my wife now." Akshay snubbed him good-naturedly.
The doctor was shocked and so were many others when they heard the news. How could a young woman, who was twenty-five years of age and who had a face and figure to rival a movie star marry a sick old man like Akshay? They all came to the same conclusion. It was the money power. A girl brought up in an orphanage and who had to work as a low paid nurse was marrying money and not the man. Akshay would realize this soon enough.
Even Akshay's only child, a daughter, who was married and settled abroad, threw a fit when she heard about her father's decision. After her mother's death, some fifteen years back, they were the only two members in the family. Of course it was a different matter that they didn't get along well. It was difficult to tell who was to be blamed for the fragile relationship. After her marriage, the daughter had seen her father only twice and they rarely talked on the phone. But all said and done, she was his sole legal heir. Naturally the old man's marriage, and that too with a woman younger than her, enraged the daughter. "The sleaze ball is after your money." She screamed to her father on the long distance phone call. Akshay laughed and disconnected the line.
"What do these people think, I am a fool or what?" he was amused. It was not that the similar thought had not crossed his mind when Ishani had come close to him during the days of his illness. But now he had no doubts. When he told her about his daughter's apprehensions, Ishani simply said, "Why don't you make a will and give all the property to your daughter? After all she is your only child."
"And what about you?" asked Akshay.
"I have you. What more do I want?" replied Ishani.
"In case something happens to me?
"I will go back to nursing."
Akshay thought his heart would burst with joy and love. He didn't tell anything to anybody but immediately after his marriage he changed his will and gave half of his estate to Ishani. She had given his life back to him. He would see to it that her life would always runs smooth.
Even after marriage, Ishani remained what she was before. A simple, affectionate woman. She didn't much care for jewellery or clothes, but loved shopping for Akshay. "But these clothes and accessories are for a young man" he once said. To which Ishani's reply was, "Right. I have a young husband."
Even people remarked Akshay was looking younger and healthier after his marriage. Ishani loved him and also taught him how to love. On her first birthday after marriage, Akshay asked Ishani what she wanted as a gift. Ishani hesitated a little and then asked her husband to donate twenty five thousand rupees to a nearby orphanage.
Akshay donated fifty thousand to the place and bought a diamond necklace worth two lac rupees for his wife. Ishani first scolded him on his extravagance and then cried with happiness. That was also the day when Akshay transferred his outstation properties ownership on Ishani's name. When he told her this, Ishani was scared instead of being happy. "People would say that I am only after your money."
"People also say I am only after your beauty and youth. Now you tell me, who is the greedy villain in the story?" Akshay laughed.
He didn't know at the time that a real villain was lurking somewhere nearby. Akshay couldn't laugh when the very next day after this conversation, some man called him up in his office and said, "Leave Ishani, or else I would kill you."
