It's your life - Part I

It's your life - Part I "Do you love me?"
"No"
"Then why did you marry me?"
Because in my last birth I had committed so many sins that to atone for it, I had to marry you in this birth. But again I have piled up so many sins, that I think, I will have to marry you next time too, and even after that so help me God."

Saying this, Ishani leaned forward to kiss Akshay's leathery cheeks and got up from her chair. "Now you sit here and think of more silly questions to ask. Meanwhile I WILL GO AND WORK.

"What work? You have two servants working in the house. You just have to order."
"Oh, I need to order you now to take your medicines."
"If I say no?"
"Then I will die."
"You?"
"Yes. Doctor has said that if you don't take medicines, you will die early. And If you die, how would I live?" Ishani smiled and went inside the house to fetch medicines for Akshay.

"I am the luckiest husband in the whole world." Akshay thought happily. And then wondered once again, as he had done a thousand times before, what he had done to deserve a wonderful life partner like Ishani?

Akshay was old and ugly. Ishani was young and beautiful. He had so many physical problems that instead of going to the hospital, he could have set up a personal hospital in his own house. And he had almost done it. A year before, when his body rebelled once again, he had to be hospitalized. Although this was not a new experience for Akshay who had accepted that he was a very unhealthy man and had to depend on doctors and medicines if he wanted to keep alive and of course mobile. This time he got fed up with the long stay in there. He was a workaholic and was used to having his own way.. It was difficult for him to conduct business from the hospital where the restrictions on the use of phones, computer, visitors etc were too many for his liking.

Ultimately, he and his personal physician reached a compromise. Akshay would rest at home and a trained nurse would stay there to take care of him.

"You mean, to keep a watch on me?" Akshay asked sarcastically.
"Whatever. Either that or the hospital. Make your choice." Replied the young doctor with a no nonsense attitude. He cared enough to find a good nurse for his patient.
The old man hated her on the sight. "You have sent me a school kid." He called up the doctor and complained.

"She was the best student in the nursing college and has worked with me for two years. You should be thankful that I am lending you her service. Now relax and do whatever she asks you to do." The doctor laughed before hanging up the telephone.

Akshay didn't laugh. He scowled, snorted, shouted, and sulked. In short, he behaved like a typical insufferable cranky old man. This went on for a week. Then Akshay realized he had met his match. The nurse who looked like a college kid was wise beyond her years. She knew how to manage difficult patients. She could be as intimidating as she was sweet. She almost took over Akshay's life with a one-point programme-Get well soon. Under her supervision, Akshay had no other option but to recover within a few weeks.
