The suitable girl
Chetan closed the chat window and logged off with a smile on his face. The smile remained until he went to sleep. It was for that special someone who called herself Mystique Queen and chose to remain unseen until the "right" time came.
Chetan wondered at the stirrings that her thoughts had begun to evoke in his heart. He had discovered a gentleness and innate sincerity which came through all barriers of cyberspace. He didn't know where it all began and where it all would lead. He didn't even know what she did, where she lived or what was her background. He just knew that she wanted the same things that he did in life - dignified existence spiced with a little adventure.
Nowadays, every morning he got up with that same strange tugging in his heart. Just as he was nursing his poor heart, his father looked up from his newspaper and said to no one in particular, "Girls are becoming more and more independent nowadays. It is very nice to see them fighting their own battles. It is really heartening." So saying he went back to his paper, leaving Chetan and his mother as usual to make sense of the whole thing. Which they didn't bother to because they knew a rejoinder would soon come. And it did.
"There is this new girl at the office. In marketing. She is doing a part-time job. Hmmm... very talented girl. How she put Mahajan in his right place yesterday! Mahajan was trying to push his blame on her just because he is lazy and she is a junior. Any girl would've listened to the fatso and cried a little and forgot about it. But she? No! She put Mahajan in his right place. No abuse or no raising of voice but Mahajan learnt not to mess with her. Hahahahaha..."
So saying Mr. Rajeshwar went back to his paper. Chetan finished his breakfast and left for college.
At college, Chetan parked his bike and saw Rajni. Rajni was his classmate whom he hardly ever spoke to. She quickly averted her eyes and hurried to her class. Chetan looked after her for a second and continued to his class. There was something about Rajni that... an innate Indianness, a pride in her heritage that was so well-etched in the shape of her back, in the way she carried her head.
Physics class with Prof. Anand Rai went in dreaming about the 'Mystique Queen' and getting nudged by Zaffar, his best friend.
"So what did the Mystique Queen say yesterday? When are you guys meeting? Asked Zaffar with an ironical grin.
"Hmmm... wish.. if only... " so saying Chetan stretched out on the bench.
"I think I love her... " said Chetan after a pause. "Listen yaar , I am terribly confused. I haven't even seen this girl and don't even know the girl's background, but there is this sincerity of hers that attracts me... "
"Hmmm... I think you are pretty much done for! But now if we don't run for Teen Patti's lecture we will be done for!"
In class there was a debate going on whether jeans and short skirts should be allowed in college. Chetan and Zaffar sat down to listen but did not participate. But the usually quiet Rajni did not hesitate to keep her opinion to herself. The confused debate flowing randomly around gender, eve-teasing, discipline, freedom was neatly shelved in around two issues by Rajni. The right of a woman to hold her head high and how much does dress constitute towards being Indian. Lot of heads were motivated to do some serious thinking. Chetan was one of them. But his track was slightly askew. He found Rajni's strong sense of identity and clear awareness of her value system very impressive. After all, those were important values to live a life by.
