The gift
|
The next morning while Anang was having his breakfast Rishita received a call from the jeweller. "Madam,we have checked all the jewellery that you left here. The total weight of the bangles and the chain is forty grams and the gold is of good quality."
"Yes, yes, and what about the necklace?" Rishita asked. All these years she had never bothered to ask but now there was a sweet anxiety.
There was a short pause at the other hand and then the jeweller asked softly, "Madam, you really don't know ?"
"No, I am not an expert on gold and precious stones." Rishita laughed nervously.
The jeweller sighed and said, "Sorry, but there is neither real gold nor precious stones in the necklace or its matching earrings."
"What?" Rishita almost screamed. Anang looked up from his newspaper.
"Yes ma'am, it is an excellent piece of imitation jewellery, perhaps, made abroad. I would advise you to leave it as it is."
"Ok" Rishita didn't know what else to say. Her original doubts were not unfounded. The old and now very dead lady was a cold fish after all. Rishita was a fool to think that the wretched woman could part with a precious heirloom.
But before she disconnected the call, the jeweller asked, "Madam, you had also given us a pair of ear studs."
"Oh yes," Rishita replied without much interest. Along with the necklace she had also given the jeweller the ear studs gifted by Dai hoping they might fetch a bit of silver. Now she was a bit embarrassed.
"Would you mind if I let you know about its value a bit later? Say by tomorrow morning?" asked the jeweller.
"Why?" replied Rishita.
"According to our in- house appraiser the stones in those studs are of exceptional variety. You will rarely see such flawless rubies that too set in silver. We are thinking of getting it tested by the top expert. After all their worth is not in thousands, but lacs. May I ask you where you purchased them?"
"From Dai." The words tumbled out of Rishita.
"Dai?" asked a confused jeweller and then he said "Oh, whatever. But you should have got them cleaned earlier. Once cleaned, they would light up the whole room. These rubies are fit to be worn by some Rajrani."
"You are right. They were worn by the real princess." Said Rishita with a sad smile.
