Once upon a time

Nayantara saw Neeraj looking at the photograph and smiled. "This photograph was taken on the set of my film Jadugarani."

Neeraj had never heard about the film. It belonged to an era before his birth. He just nodded and said "beautiful".

The woman's delight on hearing these words was apparent. "In those days it was a topic of debate, who was more beautiful, Madhubala or Nayantara? And see the coincidence now. After so many years two old films have released almost simultaneously. In Mughal-e-Azam, there is Madhubala and myself in Sultana."

"Hmmm."

"Of course, during the making of Sultana, I had a big fight with the producer of the film. As a result, they chopped off my role and gave more prominence to some new actress who had originally come to play a minor role. Of course, I have put all the bitterness behind. But look at them, they have not forgotten. Recently, when the film was released again, they held a grand party but nobody bothered to invite me. Even my name was rarely mentioned in the publicity campaign."

"So sad," Neeraj sympathised.

"True. But I don't care. I have seen so much in my days that such pettiness doesn't bother me now. I was one of the biggest stars. Top studios were competing to sign me. Heroes for my film were selected only after asking me. My wish was the industry's command. And talking about my fans..." a dream-like expression came on the woman's face. "Do you see that window over there?" she asked pointing with her finger.

"Yes."

"Every time I went and stood there, there was a traffic jam on the road. People would wait outside the building for hours just to have a glimpse of me. In addition to a watchman on the main gate of the building, I had to post one more guard on this floor."

"Aha."

"And my birthday was like a national event. The house used to turn into a garden with flowers. Famous people gave parties for me. My fans sent me cards written with their blood."

With these words, all of a sudden Nayantara returned to the present. She tried to smile at Neeraj and added lamely, "People still call me but I don't go. I have had enough of high life. Now I wish to live away from the spotlight."

Neeraj remembered the shine in Nayantara's eyes when she had seen the flowers in his hands. Those expressions had told him that nobody had remembered Nayantara or her birthday in a long time. He lowered his eyes and spoke softly. "Madam, I am truly lucky that I could meet you today. It was extremely kind of you to spare so much of your precious time for an ordinary fan like me. Thank you so much."
