Mili - Part II
« continued from Part - I
And thus began a new chapter in Mili's life. A life she shared with someone she wanted to. Sujal got a job at a bank and attended a part-time MBA course. Mili took a job at a call center. Both were earning decently and lived a good life. Weekends were meant for outings - to movies, theaters, beaches or walks. They were almost like a married couple.
Then came a surprise. Sujal's parents came from Bhilai to visit their son. Sujal had not told them everything about Mili. They knew he loved her, but not that they were in a live-in relationship. But, to Sujal's and Mili's surprise, Sujal's parents accepted Mili and thought that it would be better if they got married. So, as soon as Sujal finished his MBA, a lavish ceremony was held at Bhilai. It was one of the most talked about weddings in the small town. Mili could not believe what a turn her life had taken. Not even once did she think of calling her dad and letting him know about this. She felt it would only add a little drama and upset things as Mr. Mehra would never accept it. She thought it was better to forget her past life and enjoy the new one. When Mili looked back at her past, all this was a dream. She was the troubled princess and Sujal was her prince charming who rescued her. She was very happy with her life.
Surprises continued to pour in for the newly weds! Sujal's parents gifted them a flat in Mumbai! Sujal and Mili were ecstatic. Sujal found a lucrative job with an MNC and this allowed Mili to leave her job. She decided to make her home a dream home. With the money she had saved, she would re-do the house. She herself went out to shop for furniture, curtains, et al.
Once when out shopping at a mall, she couldn't believe her eyes - Mr. Mehra was there and he was with Sujal's parents! She was too shocked even to move! Mr. Mehra saw her staring and approached Mili. In his usual style he said, "I still have a chat pending. Now that your exams are over, I want to have a talk with you." Mili could not utter a word. She only managed a faint "ok".
They went to a restaurant and when they were seated Mr. Mehra began the conversation, "Mili, it came as a shock to me when I read your note. I did not know what had happened. Then I thought I should check your mobile phone to get some clues. I read Sujal's messages. I was not angry. I felt I had lost. I felt I had let your mom down. Let me tell you something you have not known, and what I was going to tell you the day after your exams got over. You are not my child. Your mom had a fling with a gentleman from London, who deserted her. All this while, she was married to me. I did not know what to do. She was bearing a child, which was not mine. I thought if that is what she wanted, so be it. I thought it would be wrong on my part to leave her in such a condition. I decided to stay with her till her delivery and then talk to her about our future. But, unfortunately, she died while giving birth to you. Leaving you to me. You became my responsibility. I wanted to bring you up in the best possible way. I did not know how to raise a child. I just followed my instincts and did what I felt was required. I did not want Mrs. Mehra to meet me up there and tell me "You did not do a god job of my child". But, what I lacked was the motherly love, the motherly touch. I could not give you that. Anyway, after your exams I wanted to free you from my rules and regulations. I wanted you to live your own life - the way you wanted. I would always be there as a support.
