Love and Kush - Part II
|
The other probability convinced Kaivalyaprasad to heed the doctor's advice. And this time when Kush said that his friend too had the same opinion, the old man didn't argue much. And the truth was the old man himself had started realising that he was not as healthy as he wanted people to believe. He frequently got tired and sometimes felt on the verge of fainting. He was aching all over. Of course, he never complained openly because for him to be sick was a sign of weakness. But now the time had come to accept reality. He decided to rest at home for a few days.
"Rest means not trying to run the office from home. Just relax." The doctor's instructions were clear.
But Kaivalyaprasad was one of those who quickly gets tired of resting. From the very next day, he started grumbling. "How long do I have to vegetate in this state?" he asked Kush.
"I will ask the doctor," Kush said.
"Ask your friend too," said Kaivalyaprasad. Kush had a hard time suppressing the smile on his lips.
That evening he brought some books for his father to read. The subjects ranged from philosophy to murder mysteries. Kaivalyaprasad finished reading all of them in two days. "Get me some more books," he requested.
"Sure. I will ask Megan to pick up some more books," Kush said casually.
"Megan,who?"
"The lady I had told you about."
"Oh, the soothsayer?"
This time Kush didn't bother to correct his father.
"Well, she seems to have good taste in literature," said Kaivalyaprasad. According to him all that he liked was considered good taste.
After musing a little he told Kush, "Why don't we invite her home once?"
Kush wanted to shout 'yes.' Instead he said calmly, "I will ask her."
Of course the facade of calmness broke down that evening when he met Megan. "Darling, there is a crack in the wall," he said bursting with joy.
"Really?" Megan asked coolly.
"Yes, the old man wants to meet you. I think he already likes you."
"But he won't. Once he meets me and discovers that I can't predict the future."
"Oh-forget about the future. I know you can keep him engrossed talking about other things. By the way... he loves to play chess in which you are pretty good. And ya, he hates cricket just like you do."
"Why don't you make a list of everything he likes and dislikes, so that I can go and play the part accordingly," Megan said mockingly.
Unfortunately for her, Kush took the suggestion seriously, and actually wrote down the list for her. He felt very witty when he titled the list 'How to please Mr Unpleasable'.
