Love and Kush - Part I

Love and Kush - Part I
"If you want to become a full time actress, go ahead. But then you will be blowing up the last chance of being my wife."

Normally such words would make the man sound and look autocratic, a prototype MCP who thinks that woman's place is in the kitchen. But Kush was nothing of the sort. While uttering the warning like words, his voice trembled and he appeared so pathetic that instead of being angry, Megan felt a strange mix of pity and disgust for him. "Do I really love this wimp of a man?" she wondered for the umpteenth time.

The problem was she did. Megan had been in love with Kush for last two years. Now she wanted to be promoted from being a girlfriend to being a wife.

Born and raised in a Roman Catholic family residing in a small town of Karnataka, Megan was a simple girl with limited ambitions. All she wanted out of life was a college degree, marriage and motherhood. But her beauty decided her destiny.

In the last year of college, a fashion photographer discovered Megan and the simple Catholic girl from Karnataka ended up in the big bad world of fashion modeling in Mumbai. It took her one whole month to find her ways in the strange and somewhat frightening city. In the second month, Kush found her.

They met in a party thrown by a well-known magazine. Megan had gone there feeling like a lost babe in the wood who hardly knew anybody and didn't know what to say to a stranger. Kush came and not only rescued her but swept her clean off her feet in the very first meeting.

Kush was short, fair and handsome, the kind which can bring out motherly instincts in some older women. Megan was his age, so she fell in love with him and started dreaming about marriage and kids. Kush too loved this beauty that was tall, dark and didn't understand a word of the language spoken in his house. She couldn't even pronounce the name of his father, which happened to be Kaivalyaprasad Tapadia.

The old man was as impressive or intimidating, whichever way you look at him, as his name. Widowed at the tender age of forty he never remarried and concentrated on his business and the only son, Kush. Business flourished but the same couldn't be said about the son. Kaivalyaprasad behaved liked a ruthless dictator in office as well as in the house. He loved his son who according to him didn't know anything. The house was run by Kaivalyaprasad rules and regulations, which were strict and old fashioned, sometimes unreasonable in the eye of the son. But like they say, it was the old man's house and if you wanted to stay there, you better not upset him.

Kush, till the age of twenty-three never even thought of doing it. But then he met Megan and his life turned upside down. Megan had everything that he liked but his father was never going to accept Megan as his daughter-in-law. A South Indian girl who was a good two inches taller than his son, worked as a model, ate non-veg food and to top it all, was a Christian by religion. Kaivalyaprasad was a high caste Hindu and very proud of it. Forget about eating non-veg, he didn't even touch onions. He never employed women in his office and thought that inter caste marriages were breaking up the good old social set- up.

Kush knew that the moment he told him about his intention to marry Megan, his father would disown him and kick him out from the home as well as the office. He loved Megan, but the idea of being a poor penniless husband didn't appeal to him. But then how can you say such an unromantic thing to your lover who thought love alone makes the world go round? So to her he spun yarns about respecting his father and all that jazz.
