Kaun Banega Crorepati

Kaun Banega Crorepati
"Was that close!" exclaimed a relieved Gaurav.

"Too close for comfort. But, like always, we managed to escape unhurt and unrecognised. We are still anonymous," laughed Sameer.

Gaurav and Sameer were two con artists. I could've easily used the words thieves or robbers, but that would undermine their brilliance. They were truly artists; deft, skillful and creative. They could've easily been heading a mega successful multinational company if they wished, but they always dreamt of short cuts and the easy way out, like most of us. Today, they had come a long way from their first con, in which they had managed to fool an entire village, selling their wares back to them at double the price and fleeing away with the money. Gaurav, posing as a trader, offered the villagers a great deal on their wares.

Initially, he did pay them honestly and offered to triple the price if they could double their supply. Villagers did not have enough resources to double their production. Enter Sameer, disguised as Gaurav's assistant. He offered to sell the villagers their own wares that Gaurav had stocked, at double the price of which they had sold them to Gaurav, telling them they would get triple the price later. The greed of the villagers and the smart, convincing Sameer, managed to lure the villagers into the deal. The transaction was carried off seamlessly, and the next thing the villagers knew was, well, Gaurav and Sameer had disappeared and were nowhere to be found!

Gaurav and Sameer never ever repented or felt bad for their deeds. Guilt was not one of their virtues. However, of late, love certainly was. Gaurav had met Nisha in Delhi, where they were currently operating from. They had met at a private party. It was love at first sight for Gaurav who didn't do much to hide his feelings. Nisha was taken in by his charm and smooth talks. They started dating and soon, they were in love with each other.

Sameer, however, was not too convinced of this relationship. Infact, Sameer was the kinda guy who wouldn't have been convinced about any relationship that had even a semblance of emotional attachment. He tried talking to Gaurav, but their discussions often ended up in arguments. Gaurav was madly in love with Nisha, something he had never experienced before. Sameer was only concerned about them being unmasked and as a result, get caught and end up serving in prison for rest of their lives. Their strength lay in the fact that they never cared about whom they were fooling. They were absolutely devoid of any emotions or attachments. They were only concerned about carrying off their heist flawlessly and escaping unhurt or unrecognised. The latter being their forte. Sameer was scared that any form of emotional attachment would ruin their lives and would lead to them getting caught. With no solution in sight, Gaurav and Sameer had decided to live independently from now on, with a promise of not revealing their past to anyone.

But before they could go their separate ways, it was only appropriate to perform one last but really big con together as a team. And that's what they had accomplished today. Their last con as a duo. They had targeted a wealthy businessman of Delhi and today, they had successfully managed to carry out their task, as always, impeccably. Gaurav and Sameer celebrated the success of their last ever 'project' and parted ways. They divided their wealth they had accumulated, equally. Neither of them knew where the other was going.

Thereafter, Gaurav went to meet Nisha. Nisha did not know much about Gaurav and likewise, nor did Gaurav know much about Nisha. They had hardly been together for a couple of months. All Nisha knew about Gaurav was that he was a stock broker who was planning to settle down. Gaurav only knew that Nisha was a beautiful and caring MBA graduate. He did not know anything else about her personal life or her family. How he wished he knew! Because, when Gaurav met Nisha that day, he was in for a shock of his life. The businessman they had conned was none other than than his sweetheart, Nisha's father! Nisha was very depressed that day. Her father had taken a major loan to invest in the non-existing project of Gaurav and Sameer and now he was on the verge of bankruptcy.

Gaurav felt miserable that day. But he knew what he was going to do. He was going to give away all his wealth to Nisha's father, not only to repay the loan, but also to set his business again. But no, he wasn't going to reveal his true identity and ask for forgiveness. Rather, he had decided to join in Nisha's father's business, marry Nisha and lead a peaceful family life henceforth. How he wished Sameer too would join him, because he knew, they two were an unmatchable combination.

A day later, Gaurav went to meet Nisha's father, and he was a little nervous, "What if he recognises me?" Afterall, it was the first time he was meeting his victim post a con. But, to his relief, the get up he had used during the con was immaculate and did not let him down. Nisha's father was only happy to welcome his future son-in-law in the family. Life was looking bright and joyous for Gaurav now.

Then came the day when he was going to sign the official documents with Nisha's father. This was the first time ever that Gaurav was going to do something legally. He went to Nisha's house, but found no one there. Ofcourse, it did not take long for it to dawn on him that the tables had turned. He had given all he had to Nisha's father already. His world came crashing down. He was not only heartbroken and hurt, but shocked when he read this note-

SORRY, GAURAV.
SOMETIMES YOU ARE THE PIGEON, SOMETIMES YOU ARE THE STATUE.

-NISHA, NISHA'S FATHER AND.......
