Dream girl - Part II
« continued from Part I
"Come on, come on..."
Sujata turned around to see a woman with two kids entering the compartment. They all appeared as though they had come running to catch this train.
The woman looked around and saw the empty seat across Sujata. She herded her kids in that direction and all of them sat down. Perhaps, flopped on the seat, would have been the right description.
She was a heavyset woman and was still puffing from the run. She wiped the sweat from her forehead with the back of her hand.
The unpleasant odour of perspiration, mixed with some cheap perfume, filled Sujata's nostrils. The fan overhead was making more noise than churning air.
The woman looked at the fan and then at Sujata. "It is so hot," she complained loudly.
Sujata nodded. In fact she was quite comfortable. But looking at that woman, it was easy to understand, why she looked all sweaty and bothered. Heavy body, wrong clothes, and some mental irritation, which showed on the face!
"Mama, I am thirsty!" the younger of the two kids whimpered.
"Ah, the train has hardly started, and you start with your demands!" said the woman harshly. "Why couldn't you drink water when you left home?"
"But mama, I am thirsty now..." The little boy looked ready to cry.
"Ok. Ok." The woman fumbled in the huge plastic bag she was carrying and took out a water bottle.
"Now drink this and don't you dare spill a drop!"
In spite of her warning, the boy did manage to spill some water on his shirtfront and on his sister's frock, who was sitting besides him.
"You idiot," the girl screamed and pushed her brother. The boy tried to push her back. And in the scuffle that followed, more water spilled.
"Enough!" The mother screamed and whacked the girl on her head, making her cry out in pain and anger.
Sujata shuddered. She had never raised a hand on her daughter Prachi. But then Prachi was a sweet, well-behaved girl.
The girl across was now sulking with one finger up inside her nose. The boy took a toffee from his shirt pocket, opened, threw the wrapper on floor and started chewing noisily.
"My Prachi would never look or behave like these kids," Sujata thought. And then immediately felt guilty. "How can I blame them? They are just children! Learning everything from their father and mother... and look at the mother!"
Sujata turned slightly to get a better look of the woman. At first glance she appeared to be in her late thirties. But now Sujata realized that she couldn't be more then thirty.
Obviously the woman had not taken good care of her self. Her face was not unattractive. Perhaps once upon a time she might have even been a good-looking girl. But now here was a sad and tired looking creature.
Her ill-fitting blouse and heavy sari failed to hide her shapeless body. When she spoke her double chin quivered.
