Dream girl - Part I

Dream girl - Part I "There was hardly any boy in our class who was not smitten by her..."

"Yeah, hardly any boy," Rohit said with a sigh. "Boys loved her and girls hated her!"

Sujata was not still sure, what she herself felt about Seema, the woman being discussed. So often in the past had she heard this name and most of the time from her husband, Rohit. Right from the start of her marital life.

As the days passed, the frequency of the utterance of that name had reduced but still it was more than Sujata would have wished for.

And today, Rohit's old friend Sunil had come home. They were in college together. After graduating, Sunil had gone abroad. He was not here when Rohit married Sujata. But they had kept in touch via letters and e-mails. After five years Sunil had come to India for a short vacation.

It was time to meet friends and remember the good, and also some bad old days.

And when they were talking about college, how could the name of Seema, be left out?

Of course Sunil hesitated a little when Seema's name cropped up for the first time but Rohit put him at ease by saying, "Hey don't worry, Sujata knows all about her!"

Sujata smiled and nodded. She knew all right. More then she cared actually.

She had never met or seen Seema but had heard enough to draw a mental picture of her.

And that picture was something to feel wonder and awe about. If what Rohit and others said about her was true, then Seema was no less beautiful than Madhubala or Aishwarya Rai.

Seema and Rohit had an affair or something like an affair, Sujata was not sure what. And Rohit had never clarified.

What was clear was that Rohit was crazy about Seema. Perhaps they had a few laughs together. But then fate intervened and they parted company.

After finishing his studies Rohit joined his father's business and married a girl of his mother's choice. Not that he was unhappy about the match. He was a good husband.

As such, Sujata had no reason to complain about their life together. Rohit was a good provider, a caring husband, loving father to their daughter. But....

But it seemed that he had not entirely forgotten Seema.

And if it was just that then Sujata wouldn't have minded much. After all it is not easy to forget your first love. But what irritated her were the direct, indirect comparisons. It seemed whatever she did, Seema could or could have done better!

Sujata was not allowed to forget that she was Rohit's second choice, a somewhat inferior choice.

"We all thought that ultimately, you would be the lucky winner, who gets Seema"...Sunil was saying.

"Oh, I was not so lucky after all! "Rohit said draining his glass of beer and looked at Sujata."

Sujata felt, as though he had slapped her. She could hear, what Rohit was not saying. 'I was not lucky, so instead of Seema, I got Sujata.'

By this time, Sunil too had drunk quite a bit. But alcohol had not completely killed his sensitivity and sensibility. Now he had the grace to feel embarrassed.
