College, confusion and romance - Part I
|
This sounds confusing I know. But isn't everything in life?
Payal hasn't told her folks that she's got this sort of thing going with Rahul. They have even booked her tickets to India this summer looking for prospective prospects. I think another "Tina" influence. What is it one family wants a boy from India and everyone in our neighborhood will follow. According to the grapevine, Payal's mother has short-listed two or three serious prospects through the on line matching website. And to get to the nitty-gritty rumour has it that Payal has given her stamp of approval to this exercise officially. Unofficially I don't think Rahul has a clue that his lady love is looking...elsewhere if you know what I mean.
My heart simply burps every time Rahul enters my personal zone if you know what I mean. My stomach churns, my hands sweat, I start to shift my eyes away from him...all the things you are not supposed to do if you are interested in someone.
Then I get a chance to berate myself later and say, "I should have said this or done that."
My only confidante in this entire mess is, Sandra.
"Why don't you just find out if he wants to meet you for coffee of something," says Sandra flipping back her sun-burnt raven hair.
"Are you nuts, and what am I supposed to tell Payal, I just happened to be sitting with her boyfriend at Starbucks?"
"Why not... I mean you could have bumped into him or something," she suggests mischievously.
"Yeah, I guess I could do that, but it wouldn't really be fair to Payal," I sigh out loud.
Sandra replies, "Well nothing is fair in love or war is it?" she starts laughing at her own joke.
Now to make matters a little more "soapy", Rahul, we have heard through the churning gossip mill had learned that Payal is supposed to be visiting India in the next two months.
And I also heard from a reliable source, his brother Dhruv, that he wasn't sure what he was going to do about this. And I found out from Mrs. Patel at the mandir , that Mrs. Khanna was looking to book the mandir for early next year for a special puja.
Apparently, Mrs. Khanna has met Payal a couple of times and has even invited her to their house for dinner as "Rahul's friend". Another minor oversight and to muddle up this confusion even more, Mrs. Khanna, thinks that Payal has told her parents about Rahul.
By the time I arrived the girls had finished bowling. "Why so late?" said Sandra.
"We finished a set, "said Malti.
"Oh something suddenly came-up," I replied.
At the pub, Rahul and Payal, were already sitting at a table. Payal saw us and waved frantically, trying to catch our attention amidst the hustle and clatter of the busy area, indicating to us to hurry up or someone might take out seats.
Rahul was holding Payal's hand. I could feel that same churning feeling inside as we got closer and approached their table.
"Does anyone want something to drink?" I asked as soon as we had taken our seats. I found a napkin and wiped the sweat off my hands. And rebuffed myself for my nervousness.
Malti said, "I'll help you." And she also got up.
We got the drinks and returned to the table. The mood was light and the conversation was animated. Everything was proceeding pleasantly enough when Sandra brought up the topic of marriage.
"Do you think friends should marry one and other?"
Malti said, "Sure, why not?"
"I see no problem, I mean isn't friendship the basis of everything?" I said.
Rahul agreed, "It all starts with friendship right," he looks at Payal knowingly and probably expecting an approving response if not an answer.
Payal looked uncomfortable and started to fidget slightly.
Sandra asked her, "Yeah, what do you think Payal?"
"I don't know. I mean obviously friendship is so important to a relationship, but I think you have to also take family considerations into..." she hesitated for a moment, "consideration. I mean you have to have your families consent or it's really not worth it," she shrugged seemingly nonchalantly and avoided looking at Rahul. I noticed he dropped her hand as she gave her answer.
