When Casanova came calling...
|
But after two days, it looked as if that Maya who seemed so impressed with Ronit on the first day had now changed her mind.
"What did he do?" Peter asked again. Ronit had already left for his work, early that morning.
"I told you. Nothing specific. But I don't want him to come back here anymore." Maya said in an annoyed voice and walked out of the kitchen. As far as she was concerned, the chapter was closed. Knowing his wife, Peter didn't try to pursue the matter. Also, the fear of knowing the whole truth kept him quiet then. Suspicion had already entered his mind, but he didn't want to ask or hear openly if indeed his friend had made a pass at his wife.
Later that evening, Peter was cordial with his guest but the atmosphere was somewhat strained. If Ronit was surprised, he didn't ask. Immediately after dinner he left for Delhi.
"I wish, I had not invited Ronit home." That night Peter tried once again to draw Maya into a conversation about what Ronit had done. But Maya refused to take the bait. "Just forget about him, good night," she kissed his cheek lightly and turned off the bed-side lamp.
Long after Peter had gone to sleep, Maya remained awake. She wouldn't forget or forgive Ronit easily. Like Peter she too wished that they had not invited Ronit. The man had humiliated Maya in a way, no woman should be. First day when they met, he had made her feel like the most desirable woman in the world. But in the end, she was reduced to feeling like the ugliest, dirtiest being in the entire universe.
The day before, Ronit had finished his work early and was home by late noon. Her instinct told Maya that sooner or later this was going to happen. The man was going to live up to his old reputation. How could he miss an opportunity to have a beautiful woman like Maya in his arms? Maya had heard stories about him. And she was ready for the moment, when Ronit made an advance.
But the wretched man didn't turn out to be, what Maya had expected. The fool didn't take the hint when Maya served him tea, only half- clad. He averted his eyes instead of feasting them on her sexy, inviting body. He tried to move away when Maya went to sit besides him. Ultimately, getting excited and almost desperate by the moment, Maya had taken his hand and murmured huskily, "Come on Casanova, let's see what a great lover you are."
The useless man just got up from the sofa and walked out of the house. He didn't say anything but before going, he gave her such a pitiful look that she wanted to die of shame. She had offered her precious self to a known womanizer, but he rejected her. Can there be a greater humiliation for a woman?
"What did he do?" Peter murmured in his sleep.
"Absolutely nothing." Maya felt like screaming.
