Jiah Khan
On Big B, her love mantras and more

Jiah Khan She has been touted as the best discovery since Urmila from the RGV factory. After Rangeela, no RGV heroine has exuded so much of screen charisma and oomph as Jiah Khan. A product of the Lee Strasberg acting school, Jiah says she was flattered when the Big B told her he has to learn acting from her since she is a student of this prestigious institution.
Making her debut opposite the Big B in Nishabd (wherein she is in love with a much older man) Jiah is sure to get noticed in her 'Lolita' role.

To get to know her shaaditimes cozied up with her in an up-town lounge. With a super toned figure this 19- year-old made many heads turn as she chatted us up.

Did you hesitate before signing up for your debut with a taboo topic?
Since I'm a London girl, Nishabd is not such a taboo topic for me. In the West as well as in the villages of India you will find young girls getting married to old men. This is even common in high societies, for instance take the case of Salman Rushdie and Padma Laxmi. This is reality and people are slowly accepting it.

What would you have done if you were in the same situation?
I would have done exactly as the character has done in the film. I can't tell you more.

It has been said that when you were shooting with Mr Bachchan you could instantly tell which brand of perfume he was wearing...how did you manage this?
Mr. Bachchan smells really good and I could tell him which brand he was wearing instantly. I had done a short stint in a perfume factory and have a good nose for perfume. Initially Mr. Bachchan would think that it was just mere guesswork. But when I started doing this regularly without fail, he was taken a back and suspected that I was going through his toiletries kit!!

What would you do if you really fell in love with a much-older man?
I have youth on my side and I don't have responsibilities too. So I don't have much to lose. A young girl like me won't think much...like a baby would try to touch fire. On the other hand, he has a much larger stake...his family, his social prestige and age. Hence it is the responsibility of older men to 'think' about society and the outcome before taking up any step. My film is just giving out this message.

Do you think such a relationship would last?
It would work if we were living in an isolated village with no one to criticise or look down. You would be able to commit mentally and accept financially as well. But if you are living in a society, especially in India, it would be much harder as people would not accept you or the relationship.

What is the importance of age difference in a relationship?
It's vital for me to get married to someone 4-5 yrs older. We all know that men mature later in life. So this gap is necessary. I'm not harping on a 40 yrs gap though.

Do you believe in love?
In my eyes, I don't think there is much love between a man and a woman. It's lust and obsession and then friendship. In most marriages which have lasted for 30-40 years you will find that in the first 5 years there is obsession and passion. After that they are with each other for responsibility and friendship. If I were very madly in love, I don't think I would marry that man. It won't last very long. If Romeo and Juliet would have got married they would have got divorced, same is the case with Othello and Desdimona.
On the contrary, I have much more faith in arranged marriages. Since that mad obsession is not there the same affection lasts even after 30 years of marriage.
