Romancing The Song: Sonali & Roop Kumar Rathod
Unstinted support
"She was highly supportive of me," continues Roop Kumar. "Those were times when I didn't know how I would earn even five rupees. But she remained unaffected by my financial situation. In fact, one incident should tell you how her support was my strength... I had to reach Santacruz to get the immigration stamp on my passport as I was supposed to leave for Dubai the same night. Riots had broken out and Mumbai was burning; all means of transport had come to a standstill. I did not have a car then. I lived at Tardeo, while she lived at Kemps Corner. I just had to tell her that I didn't quite know what to do, when she landed at my doorstep in her car. She drove me down all the way in the midst of stone pelting and rioting. She was ready to risk her life for me."
Sonali asserts that matrimony has not changed Roop one bit. "He always encourages me to sing and do my own thing. He is not like many men who want to see their wives to sit at home and do nothing. He respects my creative needs and gives me enough space.
"We did not have to do any adjustments after marriage. Our courtship period was quite long and we knew each other in and out before we got married. There were no shocking discoveries to be faced. At no point of time did we feel that we had to do certain compromises," says Sonali.
Slanging matches
Do they have professional differences and how do they deal with them? "Of course, we bring home differences at times. If we have a fight or an argument in the studio, we cannot just reach home and start pretending that nothing happened. But Roop always has the final say because he is the composer. He knows exactly what he wants from a singer," says Sonali. But Sonali isn't complaining because "Roop Kumar is good at making up!" "He gets flowers and gifts for me. Of course, after my daughter's birth my share of gifts has gone down," smiles the besotted wife. But how does she make up for the fights? "She comes and tells me chalo maaf kiya tumhe (I forgive you)," laughs Roop.
Age-old grievances
"Sonali is wonderful mother, a true friend and a very loving woman. Her heart is as pure as a child's. She never holds grudges against anyone in her heart. She is very punctual. On the other hand, I am not punctual and I can't let things go out of my head. If I had a fight two years back, I may still bring it up, but she easily forgives and forgets," Roop extols her virtues.
Like any ordinary couple they too have their grouses against each other. "He is quite messy. He doesn't like to keep things tidy and clean. If I leave the house to him, I will never find anything in its place," grumbles the lady-of-the-house in Sonali.
"She is too obsessed with cleanliness; it's like a mania," goes the endearing slanging match.
