Kashmira Shah On Love, Lust And Her New Musical - City of Dreams
|
Kashmira Shah, controversial vixen - (read the dailies on her ongoing verbal tussle with fellow competitor sultry screen siren Rakhi Sawant), sexy starlet, television reality show participant, villainous, item girl, and consummate actress steps out of the screen and onto the stage in the mega-musical "City of Dreams" in Mumbai.
What makes her stage role that much juicier is her essaying a negative character aptly named "Rakhi" in the play. Co-incidentally Rakhi in "City of Dreams" also wants to become a star in Mumbai.
Yet despite the hoopla, controversies, and litany of public accusations, statements, her link-ups, break-ups, relationships both on and off-screen Kashmira seems relatively unaffected. In person, she is nothing like her larger than life media created image. Tiny and diminutive, chirpy, and extremely articulate she comes across as a knowledgeable and sensitive individual in sharp contrast to many of her two-dimensional characters she's portrayed on screen in the past. Kashmira got her Bollywood break with Shah Rukh Khan's Yes Boss as an item girl. She has done various roles in Bollywood, television including participating in the much acclaimed Big Boss and Nach Baliye reality television shows. She's even done some Hollywood Movies - The Bollywood Bride and The Prince, the Pimp, the Jackal and the Spade. In a strange way you could almost describe her as bookish (which really should be no surprise as has penned a script in the past - Bollywood Bride).
Though she is a couple of years older than her current beau (Govinda's nephew and Bollywood television star/actor Krishna Abhishek) she certainly doesn't look it. Their relationship has blossomed in the past two years and according to Kashmira she hasn't been happier in her life.
"It's been very good despite the challenges from family that we have had to deal with," admits Kashmira. So has the media taken the undercurrents of feud with her colleague, fellow item girl Rakhi Sawant out of context? "Well, no, not really," says Kashmira. "We've had our differences which started on the reality television show Big Boss and seemed to percolate on Nach Baliye," shrugs Kashmira and closes the topic for a moment.
So is the character in the stage play "City of Dreams" like Rakhi or Kashmira? "No to both," laughs Kashmira. "I really can't speak for Rakhi, but the character of Rakhi is a fictional character that is in sharp contrast to the main lead character played by newcomer - Lucky Morani. Both girls arrive in Mumbai to become stars and both achieve it in different ways."
She pauses and continues, "The difference between me and the character Rakhi is that I will not do anything for a role. I believe in being an actress one should not have to compromise one's morals. The similarity between me and the character of Rakhi is that both are honest, brave, upfront and bold and always willing to act," she clarifies and adds, "Thankfully there are these differences if you see the outcome of the play you'll know what I mean," she says without giving away the story.
Is it more interesting playing negative characters? "Yes, definitely, I played a terrorist in the movie Jungle, a sister in Murder, an item girl in Yes Boss to name a few, and I think that was a most difficult character to develop.
How is theatre different from television or film? "Well, it takes a lot of patience. You have to have sheer determination to stick with it and not quit. And thirdly, there are no re-takes," she muses. "You get that one time to make a first impression and that is what stays."
The secret of her success? "I don't consider myself an actress. I believe really successful actors are people that know how to project an extension of themselves into the fictional character they are creating. Although I have to say I really admire actors that modulate and can do a realistic mimicry of a real person, dialect or accent. I still have to work on that."
Shaaditimes finds out what makes sexy star's heart tingle.

"Means Krishna. He is genuine unlike most men I have met in my life. He is himself and he has the staying power. I love that he is an excellent cook, he has the physical attributes, and he does not fake it. He really is a genuinely happy man. I never came into the industry to become a big star. That way we may have split personalities because I think he will become a huge success.

Not taking any one for granted. I do this by trying to behave as if this is the first time I have met them and the last time I am going to see them.

Yes. I believe in the Universe with all its possibilities. Thank-God. Krishna has girls come onto him all the time. Yet I believe in his love for me and our love together. I also believe in Destiny. I was previously married to an American and things didn't work out although we are still good friends. I think you have to believe in things as they are destined to be and not mull over regret.

"Well it is a necessity. We Indians may have created the Kama Sutra but we need the West to show us the way. We may have brought love to world but the world seems to be teaching us how to love. Just look at the Khajuraho caves for inspiration. To me lust is looking at your wife and getting turned on. No amount of money can buy you that orgasm."

"Success is the best revenge for jealousy and I believe it is also necessary for my success. It is responsible for my success and a by product of my success."

"A part of your soul, your spirit and you."

"Envy and greed seem to be two jhalaks of the same. I have been neither.

"Yes, I get angry very fast and I simmer just as fast."
