Prahlad Kakkar: India's "ad hatter"
Far from food and fitness...
|
"The categories and lifestyle of fitness would vary from individual to individual. "I do occasional exercising. I find the process of physical exertion horrendous. That's why my first love is scuba-diving because it opens up a new world under water." Both Prahlad and his wife are expert scuba-diving instructors and run schools in Lakshadeep. "I would like to say I walk, or do yoga, but really I just don't have the time."
"For overall health, I think the best health is to be yourself," he alludes. "I am exactly the same person sitting here today as I was when I was young. It's too complicated to get affected by the glamour of bright lights and stardom. I am content with being consistent, honest, and simple," he adds.
On men and women
"Men are a fickle lot," he states. "They just don't grow up. Men also dump all the responsibility on women. The women are responsible for running their house and looking after their children. That's why I would advise women not to chase good-looking men who never grow up. You should find a man like me," he jokes. " You know someone that is a good conversationalist, cook and sports person. It's shocking how many women fall for "ugly" men like me. I think they feel comfort in my aura," he concedes.
On a picnic...
"My picnic basket would be full of Stilton blue cheese, crusty fresh bread, cold cuts and smoked salman. If I could I would set a barbecue filled with prawns, fish-fillet and chicken. There would also be jacket potatoes. I would take everybody to Lakshadweep and catch the fish fresh there. Probably a Grey- snapper with groups of middle fish, barracudas barbecued with lots of salt and lemon juice and of course butter. All prepared with garlic chopped fine. I would serve it in coconut shells and banana leaves. For dessert I would serve home-made ice-cream the type you shake up in a decanter topped with fresh cream and fruit. Oh don't forget the most essential thing, a red Beaujolais wine or a Californian chiraz."
Favourite haunts...
"My favourite restaurants in Mumbai include Indian Jones at the Oberoi, I like the ITC Dum Phukt and the dim sims at China White (Bandra) where a cute rabbit-toothed Chinese cook makes the best dim sims."
"The most expensive dinner I've attended has been at a Japanese restaurant "NOBU" in England. It is a makeshift bungalow and Leander Paes took a few friends there for dinner. I think he is still questioning why he took us to NOBU once he saw the bill," he laughs. "It was simply outstanding...mixed matai...fusion and fashionable. Everybody was somebody at the table."
