Playing it cool

Vivek OberoiThe Oberoi boy is all set to sweep Aishwarya Rai off her feet in his new role. Check out how.

The hype surrounding Vivek Oberoi's much-awaited film, Kyon Ho Gaya Naa  is reaching fever pitch because it marks the onscreen debut of Vivek Oberoi and Aishwarya Rai as a romantic pair. Shaadi.com caught up with Vivek Oberoi on the sets of Subhash Ghai's new period drama, Kisna , to put on record his pre-release heebie-jeebies and the experience of working with queen bee-Aishwarya Rai.

Tell us about your role in Kyon Ho Gaya Naa .
Arjun Khanna, the character I play, is a complete guy's guy. He loves adventure sports, bungee-jumping, bowling alleys, racing cars... that sort of things. He's a kid at heart, a prankster, who refuses to grow up.

Though he is not traditional, he believes that 'if something is not broken, don't fix it'. That is where his belief in arranged marriage comes in. 'If it worked for my grand-dad and my father then it will work for me, too.' That is his approach. It is about not taking on headaches unnecessarily. He believes that running behind girls is such a waste of time. 'Who wants to become a Devdas  or Majnu ... a skirt chaser et al ?'

Did you identify with the character?
Look I have been mature for quite a long time now. But there is this other side of me, which refuses to grow up, which is always on the lookout for pulling pranks on everyone. This badmashi ka bachcha , as I have been recently renamed loves to pull a fast one on everyone. I convinced my foreign co-star that a laddoo  might explode if she were to touch it. She actually believed me for a minute thinking it was a high intensity explosive!

Tell us about Aishwarya's role in the film.
She is Diya. She is this romantic girl who believes in everlasting love and romance that just happens willy nilly. She is the epitome of a 'Mills and Boon' heroine who believes that a tall, dark, and handsome guy will walk up and sweep her off her feet. Then Arjun lands up in her life like a screeching record, the exact opposite of everything she has ever dreamt of. The relationship is quite pally, and then suddenly romance blossoms between them.

What was it like working with Aishwarya?
She is a brilliant co-star. She is very professional and a wonderful human being. There is this alarm that announces her arrival on the set. She is a complete giggler. In fact, it has been wonderful interacting with her right from the moment I met her when the movie first started to date - after the picture has been completed and slated for release.

It has been rumored that when you are around Aishwarya you become a different person. You have eyes only for her and become besotted; you change. Please comment.
I change my clothes everyday and that is all that changes. If I was besotted with Aishwarya I would not be able to focus on my work and be such a thorough professional that I am. I have worked around her for more than 110 days. And if you were to ask anyone from Amitabhji  (Bachchan) and Samir Karnik to the crew of the unit, I am sure they will tell you how professional I am. If I were 'besotted', as you put it, my focus would not have been in the right place and all these people who are signing me on as an actor would not be signing me.

I am completely committed to my job. Any relationship that I have or share with any person is a personal issue. I make sure it doesn't ever interfere with my profession or will ever have a public face.

How important is the success of your films? Does a 'hit' make you happy?
It depends. How does one measure success? I measure it by my own barometer and always have. For me measuring success is getting up in the morning and doing what I love doing most, and doing a good job of it. Then I am happy. I believe that a career is something that has to complement your personal life. If I become obsessed with it and dwell on it all the time then it's not worth it. After all life is a limited commodity.

I know that money cannot buy me happiness. Happiness comes from within. Money, professionalism, career - everything, just takes us away from our loved ones if we do not balance out professional and personal lives.

Is love important to you and how would you define a perfect date.
Love is the most important thing to me. Look at hate. It is such a well-defined emotion. It is so boxed. You hate a person for a particular reason. And that's it. But love is different. Even after loving someone for 25 years, you can still wake up in the morning and find a new reason to love the person all over again. Love is like life, it keeps growing, evolving.

A perfect date would be one where both of us are in a location with a lot of privacy, a lot of open wide space. Open fresh air, big blue sky, lots of lovely water and lush greenery all around. Lot of wide, open private space... that would be my perfect setting.

What about marriage?
I am not getting married.
