Tusshar Kapoor: The Comic Hero

Tusshar Kapoor InterviewAfter completing a hat trick with Golmaal series and his star studded performance in The Dirty Picture, the actor is all set for some sex comedy in his forthcoming Kyaa Super Kool Hain Hum...

Kapoor’s debut film Mujhe Kuch Kehna Hai opposite Kareena Kapoor in 2001 was his only hit as a lead actor, after which his career graph went down with a number of flops, until his sister Ekta Kapoor’s Kyaa Kool Hain Hum (2005) came up. Since then, Kapoor has been sailing safe with multi-starrers. But that doesn’t mean the actor plans to continue doing only multi-starrers.
“When I entered the film industry I was quite immature and ended up making wrong choices but things have changed now and I’ve learnt from my mistakes. You’ll soon see me in a lead role,” explains Kapoor. Char Din Ki Chandni had the actor playing the lead, which didn't really do well. But this time once again the actor will be seen in a comic role in his next release Kyaa Super Kool Hain Hum. We get chatty with Tusshar Kapoor on his forthcoming film, his dream role, future projects and more...

  • Q. Did you always want to become an actor?
    A. I was just waiting for an offer. Actually, even Karan Johar had offered me to assist him in Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Ghum. I had plans of assisting him later, as I was already assisting David Dhawan at that point of time. Acting was nowhere on my mind but in the middle of all this, when I suddenly got an offer for acting from producer Vashu Bhagnani, I thought why not grab the opportunity. I was anyway just waiting for some offer in life to go ahead and do something.
  • Q. Did you undergo any formal training before being launched as an actor?
    A. Yes, after I signed my first film Mujhe Kuch Kehna Hai, I joined the Roshan Taneja Acting School. Plus, I had to improve my Hindi diction, as I lived in America for four years. So all those years in America had made my Hindi a bit rusty.
  • Q. The audience has seen a mute Tusshar Kapoor in Golmaal series. Aren’t you bored of playing a mute character? If there's Golmaal 4, would you still do it?
    A. No way! I get new shades in every sequence so there’s no chance of getting bored. As far as my character continues to entertain the audience I have no issues with playing a mute guy. But that doesn’t mean I’m fine with playing a mute character in every other film. I want to try diverse genres because I don’t plan to stick to comic roles throughout my career. But, I guess the audience likes me more in a comic role. My next film Kyaa Super Kool Hain Hum is again a complete entertainer and I'm sure people will love it. As far as Golmaal 4 goes, I would love to do it because the audience has appreciated my work in the Golmaal series, so why not?

  • Q. Poeple started liking you only after the Golmaal series but what do you think went wrong in your initial years?
I was a bit immature then because of which I ended up making wrong choices. What not to do is also very important for an actor to know and that’s where I went wrong. Of course, my dad was there to support me, but at the end of the day I was free to take my own decisions and somehow I made mistakes in life. But I’ve learnt from my mistakes and feel much more confident as an actor today.
  • Q. What’s your dream role?
To do a horror and action film someday, because I’ve tried everything apart from horror and action in the last 11 years of my career.
  • Q. Talking about Kyaa Super Kool Hain Hum, is it in any way related to Kyaa Kool Hain Hum?
No. It doesn’t continue from the first film at all. It’s the second film in the Kyaa Kool... series that we'll continue with. The only thing common between the first film and Kyaa Super Kool... are the characters, the brand of humour and the situations they fall into. It’s a mad hatter like the first one, but it definitely isn’t a sequel.
  • Q. Riteish and you are seen sharing great chemistry in the promos. How was it working with him again?
It never felt like we were working together after seven long years. Riteish and I have a great equation on screen, although we don’t really socialise much off screen since our friend circles are different. But it's great fun working with him because we both have the same brand of humour and we react to the same things in a similar manner.
  • Q. When Balaji Telefilm’s is releasing a film, do you insist on being part of the project?
No. I think every director has the right to choose his cast. Moreover, I never wanted to be launched by Balaji. I think I’ve done well enough by being my own launch pad. If they come to me with a film and if I like the script, I’ll do it but otherwise they need not necessarily take me in all their films. I do not like mixing my personal life with my professional life.
  • Q. What’s one funny experience you can remember?
    A. I have a seven-year-old fan who happens to be a friend's nephew. After watching the Golmaal series, he thought I was really dumb in real life. Of course, my friend then told him that I could speak fluently, but he wasn't convinced. One day, my friend brought him home and asked him to say hello to me. He started arguing with her saying she was fooling him. I was in splits. It was only when I finally spoke for ten minutes did he believe that I could actually talk!
  • Q. Name some director you aspire to work with.
    A. Mira Nair for sure! I think she’s simply fantastic at her job. When it comes to mainstream films, I quite like Farah Khan and Rajshri Productions. In fact, working with Rajshri was always a dream for me. I’ve grown up watching their movies and their stamp really matters to me. Apart from them, it would be Dibakar Banerjee and Rajkumar Santoshi.

  • Q. Are you an Ekta Kapoor fan?
    A. Yes, I like her work, though I don’t watch all her shows. I’m not a TV person but I like some of her shows. Whenever I get time I catch up on some of her shows.
  • Q. What does love mean to you?
    A. It's a special feeling. You will know the real meaning of love only when you fall in love and I'm still single.
  • Q. What are the projects you’re currently busy with?
    A. I’m currently working on Run Bhola Run which will release sometime next year. Its a comedy where I play a small-time thief. Then, there's Shootout at Wadala, which will release this December and Bhaiyyaji Superhit which I'm currently shooting for.
