Here's her take on her latest film, love, marriage and more... Read on.
What is your forthcoming film, Film Star all about?
As the name suggests, Film Star is a story of an actress - played by Mahima Chowdhary - who is going through a professional menopause (laughs). She is a very ambitious woman, who cannot stand any kind of failure. She thinks she is the best and is in love with herself. So it’s a story about how she finds a way to resurrect her career by trying to help a murder convict - Vasundhara Das - to get publicity for herself, and the changes that gradually happen in her as a result of a series of incidents. It is an interesting story.
Why do you always make women-centric films? Are you against men taking the lead?
You are sounding like my father (laughs). My father is completely tired of all the women on television. He says, 'in auraton ne naak me dam kar rakha hai' . If you ask me personally, I am not a big fan of the 'woman-woman' thing. It's just that naturally I tilt towards woman-based subjects. When I think about a story, it automatically drives me towards a female character, but I do change it sometimes when the story so demands. For example, it would have been really stupid to have a woman instead of Lucky in Sur . It wouldn't have worked, would have been a bad move.
But in Film Star , had I changed Mahima's character into a man’s then the beautiful chemistry between her and Vasundhara's character would be missing. So it's the force of the story which compels the sex of the character. My next movie is an English movie where I have a male protagonist... but, yes as a woman, I will never make a movie showing the female character as dumb or stupid. By ‘dumb’ I don't mean intellectually dumb... intellectually dumb is fine... I love that... but having them there for no reason is something I won't do.
What does love mean to you?
Love means hell of a lot to me... but it also means a hell of a lot of trouble (laughs). It makes you feel great, it is exciting, it gives you a companion... but when I look back, I feel, in a way, it makes you far lonelier. Even being in a relationship can make one lonelier than when one is not involved in one. When you are not in a relationship you are happy because it is that way by choice. I am single and not with anybody, therefore I am happy, though I would be happier involved with somebody. But I won't go out looking for someone for a relationship. If it happens, great, if not, that’s fine too. Of course, going out for parties and meeting a lot of people would increase the chances of finding someone, but as of now I am going through a phase where I am concentrating on my work and therefore not socialising enough. My mother is sad that I don't have anybody (says jokingly).
What do you mean when you say, 'love makes one lonelier'?
When you are in love with someone, there is so much you want to give and much you expect in return. When expectations fail it makes us desperately alone. You expect that being in love will solve all your problems, but when it doesn't then it makes you really lonely. It is a sad state to be in.
