Sushmita Sen - I am uncomplicated!
With films as varied as Filhaal, Kyukii..Main Jhooth Nahin Bolta, Paisa Vasool, Samay and Main Hoon Na along with her 'paisa vasool ' item numbers in Nayak and Fiza, Sushmita Sen has come out not just unscathed but also professionally stronger with her rocking performance in Maine Pyar Kyun Kiya as the latest jewel in her crown (pun intended).
The power of her persona and performances ensures that she isn't typecast, and also ensures her survival in increasingly meaty roles despite an erratic Box Office record.
Excerpts from an interview:
Having done every kind of commercial cinema, what is your own take on entertainment?
Commercial cinema should be timeless, like Main Hoon Na. You don't go to watch a film to spend three hours depressed out of your skull or to think so much that it evokes a negative reaction. This is the business of entertainment, and if you want to put in a message you should do in a format whereby people enjoy hearing it.
What is more important to you - a good job in a bad film, or a film in totality?
If you are talking about the commercial aspect, no, I don't think like that when I take up a film. I cannot and will not be responsible for the way a film is made, marketed and released. I will choose the best film in my power, but I will only make sure that I can count upon my performance. If it's a hit - I am very happy. If not, it is a consolation prize if they say that I did well. Samay is a perfect example of this.
Bengali actresses take themselves very seriously. Do you?
Good heavens, never! I am not a fake, and I feel that serious work can be best done only when you don't take work too seriously! If I ever became so complicated, I would get out of here!
Sushmita Sen the person is also known for multiple other activities, like being mom to Renee, your social activities, your relationships..
Yeah, and when we have twenty years' time out to chat I will tell you about all of them! For now, I have a vast life and acting is just one aspect of it. And I like to distribute my time among all these activities and people, which also includes my parents and my friends. I am a large canvas woman and if today I am doing films, tomorrow I could be doing just about anything - I may be an entrepreneur.
Acting is my profession, not my entire life. I cannot have a mindset where I forget basics like people, relationships, sleep and health for my ambitions alone. That way, I might gain in fame and money but lose out on Sushmita Sen the person. I am Sushmita the woman first, Sushmita the actress next and Sushmita the Miss Universe after that. I have my priorities. I became a mother at 24 - and Renee is my topmost priority today.
Today, my producer, my director and my co-star know that Sushmita will be available for eight hours on the sets. It's their prerogative whether they use me or not during that period, for when my time is over, I will leave.
You keep smoking. Is that advisable considering that you are a mom?
Now that's an outstanding question, and I am very glad you asked it! Smoking is a personal choice for me - I do not indulge because it is considered cool. There are some qualities I have that I am not proud about, that I am unable to junk as of today. Even Renee, who is only six, tells me, 'Mom, why do you smoke? You will get a big hole in your lung!'
You share a special rapport with Salman Khan, and you recently even wrote a column about him.
I love the man. He has lived his life on his own terms, is not ashamed of his shortcomings, has made his mistakes and ensured that he does not repeat them. He keeps doing his good deeds quietly, and does not want to spotlight them.
What would your ideal man be like?
Like Gautam Buddha! He is you, him, her or me. He is so approachable: you listen to yourself and he is there. That's how my ideal man should be - he should be within me, very close to me. Distance, which is nothing but geography, has no meaning then.
What do you think of the man-woman equation?
Both have roles to play. A woman nourishes, because she is the one with the womb. And that's not her weakness but her strength! Man is the provider, but has his limitations. I completely disagree with the feminists because a woman does not become stronger by running a man down.
You are so obviously happy. Have you ever analyzed the reason for your happiness?
God taught me humility in the best possible way - by giving me so much that I always look at the happy side of a situation. I must tell you of one specific incident. I was one of the three finalists at the Miss Universe pageant, and next to me stood Carolina, who became the first runner-up. As the suspense mounted, I was so tense that when I won, I was shocked. That photograph of mine, with my hands on my cheeks, was splashed across the world. But when the world was watching me, I saw Carolina, who could have been Miss Universe instead of me, thrilled and delighted at my victory rather than being upset at how close she had come and lost! That one moment changed my life. Why should I not be happy if there were such lovely people as Carolina in this world? |
