Princess Diaries: Soha Ali Khan
She belongs to the Royal khandaan of Pataudi. Her dad father Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, better known as Tiger has been one of the most popular (and flamboyant) cricket skippers in the annals of Indian cricket. Her mother veteran actress Sharmila Tagore was known for her versatility and her older brother Saif Ali Khan is one of India's heartthrobs.
With a family history like that and her own impish charm to boot Soha Ali Khan may well be on the way to becoming India's next sweetheart.
Soha's film debut has been anticipated since quite sometime and finally the pretty princess graced the silver screen with Dil Maange More. Will she be able to live it up to the hype and expectations?
ShaadiTimes brings you excerpts of a free wheeling conversation with one of the most sought after newcomers in Bollywood:
What made you choose Dil Maange More as your debut vehicle?
Ananth Mahadaven (the director) came to my house with the producer, Nikhil Panchamiya, and narrated the story to me. I loved the script and wanted to be associated with the project. I also liked the makers, my character and since it was a youthful musical - I instinctively felt it was right for my debut.
Weren't you sceptical about making your debut with a film that has two other heroines?
No, I really don't think so. My philosophy has always been to be a part of good films, irrespective of whether it is a small or big role. Films nowadays are more about characters and less about a particular hero or heroine.
There are a lot of expectations from you, largely due to your brother Saif Ali Khan and your mother Sharmila Tagore's repertoire?
Yes, I was becoming nervous as the D-day was approaching and I do wish that everyone would judge me as a newcomer who has a lot to learn and is very enthusiastic about her craft.
Deep down, I always wanted to be an actress, but thought that I would do something different as Amma is doing it and bhai is also doing it. So, I mulled over it for quite some time and didn't tell anyone. Till one fine day I decided to take the plunge -- I did not tell anyone and I finally quit my banking job and signed a Bengali film. I told everyone about my decision to act after I signed the film.
Do you take your mother's advice to fine-tune your skills?
My mom is like my friend -- when I was thinking about joining Bollywood, I discussed it with my mother who told me about the workings of the industry and even the nuances of acting.
You have been quoted saying that 'you haven't spent too much time with brother Saif Ali Khan while growing up'?
That's true. I was in England when Saif came back from London after completing his education. But I am a big fan of my brother's acting prowess.
Which of your brother's roles have you liked the most?
I think he is one actor who got his due after a very long time. I have liked all his roles, but then maybe that's because I am his sister. If you insist on knowing about one role, I'll give an extra mention to Ek Hasina Thi.
Your father led the Indian cricket team. How much do you follow cricket?
I am an Indian. And cricket runs in every Indian's blood (smiles). I get very edgy, especially towards the end, in most of the one-day internationals, which feature India.
How was the experience working in Dil Maange More?
It was great... we all are young so it was a lot of fun -- I was new to the scene, while the others had done some films prior to this. But there was a lot of enthusiasm and even after working the whole night there was so much energy on the sets.
It's nice to work with somebody like Shahid Kapoor who is a qualified dancer and also helps you to perform better.
How optimistic are you about Dil Maange More?
I have a lot of optimism about this film. It is light hearted and will appeal to a lot of different people from all age groups. It's a clean entertainer for the whole family - it's a very young film and that adds to its market value.
What kind of offers are coming your way?
I want to be highly selective about what I am doing - I want to do a lot of art films as well as commercial films. I believe that it's possible to bridge that divide as my mother did. I would like to continue doing Bengali films, art films and Hindi films. I am currently working for a film directed by Hriday Shetty, tentatively titled Pal Tham Gaya with Rishi Kapoor, Dimple Kapadia and Sameer Dattani. I have also signed Somnath Sen's film with Tabu and Boman Irani. |
