Playing the perfect biwi

ShaadiTimes catches Raveena Tandon at a high point in her personal and professional life. In a charmingly candid chat, she comes out as a whiff of fresh air.

Raveena TandonThe mysterious spell of her eyes has been mesmerising fans across the country. Blessed with ravishing looks, this star who has given some heartfelt and memorable performances, is the heart-throb of millions in a film-crazy nation. And now, married to the love of her life, Raveena Tandon has found the high of a life-time. Her’s was one of the most hyped marriages of the year, though she tried to keep away from the media glare.

On the professional front, too, she has taken a bold step by entering the television arena following the recent trend of big celluloid stars like Amitabh Bachchan, Sridevi and Karishma Kapoor. She will be playing the inimitable Meena Kumari’s reel-character in the televised serial, Sahib, Biwi aur Ghulam  based on Bimal Mitra’s book.

Love
To me love means togetherness, companionship and someone to lean on all your life.

Soul-mate
The way we met - me and Anil, it was destiny. It happened so instantly; we knew we had found it. It was surely destined for us. It was simply a work-oriented meeting, but we were also in the same group of friends and we just got along very well.

Special Person
What makes him special? He is the nicest person I have ever known - next to my father! To me, he is the second best person in this whole world.

Film Production
I will be working along with my brother in film production. I don’t want to go alone, because I have had bad experiences with my previous partners in the past. I realise that blood is thicker than water.

As CFSI(Children's Film Society of India) Chairman
It has only been four months. It is not a place where I can take decisions all by myself. We have to go through three to four councils even to approve a script. It is not my personal company! It is a body where everyone sits together and takes decisions. There are several protocols to follow. Ultimately it is the public money and it’s a long process before we can actually invest a single penny into a film.

When I joined CFSI, I saw that many films get made but never see the light of the day. So the idea was to release these films. Unfortunately, we don’t have big budgets. Our annual budget is something around 2.5 to 3 crores for ten films, which is really peanuts... you can’t get a quality product considering today’s inflation. But we try to manage within the budget.

Children’s Films
We are pushing for bigger budgets and for getting our films screened. The first step I took as the chairman was to join hands with various non-governmental organisations (NGOs). With their help, we screened our films in rural areas. At places where there were no theatres, we screened the film on CFSI-funded screens. We made open air theatres in parks and fields in villages. That was a very successful project.

Likewise, we started a project around four weeks ago, in which we screened films at railway stations for street children. To take CFSI to higher standards, we need support from government and from the film industry. Unfortunately, the film makers don’t come ahead to make children’s films because they feel there is no market for such films. It is a big task to convince big-time film-makers to make good films for children. These are the various hurdles we face at CFSI, which we are trying to overcome.
