Priyanka Chopra - Miss World's Universe!
Priyanka Chopra's dainty feet are rooted to the ground despite her triumphant strides from being a doctor's teenage daughter to a major A-list star. With hits like Andaaz, Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, Aitraaz, Waqt - a histrionic revelation for those who considered Priyanka only a sizzling adrenaline-boosting package Priyanka is right up there among the topmost names.
But if the word Akshay spells box-office magic for her (all their films have worked), the biggest controversy in her life has also been caused by the reports of a hot affair with her co-star. But Priyanka prefers to keep mum - 'Silence on non-issues is best!' she quips.
Excerpts from an interview:
You have played very diverse characters, down to the multi-shaded role of 'Simar' in Yakeen. Do you always relate to your characters?
I could relate to the role I played in Waqt - The Race Against Time. If I were in the same situation in real life, I would react and behave exactly the way she did. But I don't and prefer not to relate to a character. It's more fun, and more challenging to make it convincing that way.
Like in Aitraaz?
Exactly. I was very skeptical, and I wondered whether I could pull it off. Sonia was someone I could never identify with, a home-breaker too that I can never be. Also, I was just 20 or so when shooting began, and it was a very mature and difficult role to play. But Abbas-bhai and Mustan-bhai and my dress designer Vikram Phadnis pulled off the coup. Of course, some credit is due to me too! (Laughs)
Have you always enjoyed acting, or was there some point at which you began to love it?
I hated acting in films when I started out. I would do theatre when in school. The high of acting before a live audience cannot be compared with films, just like watching your film for the first time cannot be compared with theatre.
On the first day of my first film's shoot, I was told how I had to say my lines when I reached a certain mark on the floor, and I had to do it when looking in a particular direction. It was all very difficult. I went home and bawled to mom, "Yeh mujhse nahin hoga! ". She told me to finish the film and go back to my engineering college.
But why sign a film if you did not like acting?
I did not know that I would hate acting till I began shooting - after all, I had done theatre. I became a Miss World and was offered a film, so I thought I would give it a shot. Everybody does it, so I thought kar lo. My academic plans are now history!
You have a hidden talent - singing. When is your album coming?
(Laughs) No, baba, I don't think I will come out with any album! I just enjoy singing. I do want to sing in a film, but it should be an important song, a good song. I have sung on several shows of mine, like on this World Tour where every actor was showcasing hidden talents. Old songs are my favourites, as are Western songs.
Are you formally trained in music?
Yes. I was in a school in America in which I got a scholarship that I won by standing first in an IQ test - that is one of the biggest high-points of my life. I learnt Western Classical music there. Back home, dad keeps singing - to me, to my mom. He would serenade my mom with the song "Jaane kya dhoondti rehti hai aankhen " among others. So to me that song epitomizes romance and is one of my top favourites! In fact, I am also a shaayari addict.
The grapevine insists that you agreed to do all the bold scenes in Aitraaz because of your growing rapport with Akshay Kumar.
That's nonsense. You forgot that Aitraaz was also among the earliest lot of films that I signed. And I was quite uncomfortable shooting all those 'hot' scenes in front of a unit. But they were done classily, so that was okay.
Why do all actresses shun exposure after they move up the success ladder?
Basically, it is all about how people look at you. This is something you can get to know only after working in your first few films.
How ambitious are you, Priyanka?
I don't think I am ambitious or have ever been - otherwise I would have planned my career well. I have made my mistakes. I go by instinct.
From a teenager to a Miss World to a wannabe actress to a top-line star. How has the perspective on Priyanka Chopra changed at home through all these stages?
I am still a kid who's not grown up at all back home and I love that and want to keep it that way! I have matured in terms of decision-making, and become more intuitive and careful. But at home I am still my parents' child.
So how do they look at those bold scenes in Andaaz and Aitraaz?
They realized that they were integral to the plot and had been shot classily. Dad was a shade uncomfortable during a couple of scenes in Aitraaz, though.
Where does romance fit in?
I love Mills-and-Boon romance. Like there was this guy I liked who had organized a private dinner with mom and me for mom's birthday. He even sang himself and had a band playing. It was such a sweetly romantic thought.
You have recently taken up an unusual social cause - water preservation.
I think that it's extremely important. Water is taken for granted around the world. If we have to step out of the shower for a few seconds, we leave the water on. But every drop matters when there is progressive global warming. Energy in every form, trees, the environment must be conserves by us. We need to give our kids a good world to live in. |
