Neil Nitin Mukesh - The 'X' Factor

Neil Nitin Mukesh On his first break:
Jhamu Sugandh-ji was then producing Johnny Gaddaar and I signed up after auditioning with director Sriram Raghavan, who thought I had the X-factor. He however refused to put in one song on me though I wanted it for my debut since I was from a musical family! Then the film got stuck when it was 75% complete for 9 months.

That's when I realized the significance of what dad told me about fighting for myself. That period matured me as a human being and performer. Then Adlabs took over and the film was released and appreciated. I was loved in my debut but honestly all the credit should go to Sriram Raghavan. I am his protégé and he guided me beautifully.

On how he chooses his roles:
I accept films by putting myself in the audience's place, but I also want to explore what I can do in the correct kind of commercial cinema. The plus point is that I broke the norm and made a debut in a negative role. I could have been tagged as a villain but I was not. But one should try and avoid the wrong films.

When I am offered a movie, it is very important to know what I am doing in the film as a character. My forthcoming films are Tera Kya Hoga Johnny with Sudhir Mishra and a film with Suniel Shetty's Popcorn Entertainment.

On working with Dharmendra:
I have always missed my granddad's company and Dharam-ji bridged that gap with his extra pampering and love besides telling me stories about Mukesh-ji when Johnny Gaddaar was being made. Both my grandfather and father have sung for him in his home-productions, and Mukeshji of course in many other films.

On his bond with his father:
My father's simple, 'I have started respecting you as an actor, son. You made us proud,' compliment on my debut was the best accolade I ever received. He was a big-name playback singer only for a short while but you should see how popular he is as a singer on his shows worldwide, where he performs and sings a mix of Mukesh-ji's and his own major hits for anything from 4-6 hours.
