Lara Dutta: Ooh La Lara!
|
You could well exclaim ''Ooh-la-Lara!'' at the way Lara Dutta's evolved since winning her Miss Universe 2000 crown and then debuting with a scintillating performance in the 2003 hit Andaaz . The other highs include of course Khakee's 'item' song ''Aisa jadoo dala re'', Masti, Jurm (in a negative role), No Entry (as Anil Kapoor's suspicious wife), Zinda and Jhoom Barabar Jhoom.
Oddly enough, she has been a part of a lot of comedies since Masti , and the interesting point is that all have been hits - No Entry, Bhagam Bhag and Partner being the others. But most comic specialists are dead serious actors - and Lara's no exception. An Art Of Living brand ambassador, Lara is not in a hurry to be rated by numbers. She would rather grow as an actress, thank you.
Excerpts from an interview:
Q. How did you spend your birthday on April 16 this year?
A. I was home in Bangalore with my parents. Also the shooting of Ravi Chopra's Banda Yeh Bindaas Hai was over so I wanted to relax for a while.
Q. Banda Yeh Bindaas Hai and a David Dhawan film - you seem to be doing a lot of films with Govinda after Bhagam Bhag - you were also a part of Partner.
A. Yes, but in Banda... we are meant to be an odd pair.
Q. You are also doing a lot of comedies.
A. I am very happy that I am known as a comic actor. In the last five years all the great comedies have done well, and four of the best and most successful - Masti, No Entry, Bhagam Bhag and Partner - have been mine. I think that no other heroine has had such a quick innings as comic actor.
Q. Isn't comedy the most difficult aspect of acting?
A. I agree that comedy is tougher to do than anything else. But some of the best actors are comic actors. I have been lucky to work with the heroes who are masters of comedy, from Govinda to Akshay Kumar, Salman Khan and Paresh Rawal. Comedy is about timing and improvisation and one look or glance and a slight change in your dialogue delivery can actually turn your whole character around.
Q. Did you want to be an actor even before Miss Universe happened, or was it just the logical next step as in most cases?
A. I wanted to be an actor since I was thirteen. But in Bangalore, faraway Mumbai seemed just a dream. When I won the Miss Universe contest, I got offers straightaway and I was literally gifted an acting career.
Q. Most such actors, at least in the beginning, are considered as glamour babes without acting talent.
A. You cannot blame anyone for thinking that a girl from the glamour world must be slotted that way. It is up to her to get identification with her work and go beyond the beauty queen tag by doing different roles.
Q. In hindsight, are there any films you regretted doing?
A. There were one or two, but at least they were early mistakes, which is better than goofing up after 5 years in the line! I am very happy with where I have reached. I am in no hurry, and the numbers' game does not attract me. I just want to have fun. I think that I am growing as an actor and I don't obsess about a big film being made without me!
