What Does Diwali Mean To You?
How Do You Celebrate It?
|
Diwali is a festival of lights, fun and frolic. It is about sweets and shopping. It is about togetherness and the victory of good over evil. What does Diwali mean to India's famous people and how do they like to celebrate?
Lara Dutta: Diwali means a lot to me. I have very special childhood memories attached to it. So every Diwali I try to re-live that and just have a blast.
Ritesh Deshmukh: Diwali means that I might get a holiday and that is more than enough for me.
Ashish Choudhury: Lots of crackers and lots of hungama... What else?
Bipasha Basu: The best part about Diwali is all the pretty clothes, lights and the general festivity in the air. What can be better than that?
Raghu Rai (Noted Photographer): Normally we light diyas and do puja. That's the end of it. I am not the kind of person who celebrates every festival.
Shibani Kashyap (Singer): I consider Diwali as a festival of lights. I love all the festivals so this one is nothing different. I spend my Diwali with friends and family. It's a festival of togetherness.
Sharadh Jagtiani (Actor, Model): We have a Diwali party every year. I believe celebration is an essence of life. Diwali is all about celebrating joy and being together.
Sidharth Kanan (TV Host): I only celebrate two festivals with gusto. One being Christmas and the other is Diwali. I am a South Indian so I get to celebrate Diwali twice. That way, I consider myself very lucky. I usually celebrate the festival with close friends and family. I am from Bangalore so I sometimes go there for Diwali, like this time. Else, I get my family here. I think Diwali is a time for bonding with family and friends. It is about togetherness. It is also about sweets. You'll see me hogging sweets throughout.
Deepankar De (Bengali Actor): Every year, I go to a temple, one particular temple - it's called Ram Krishna Vedant Math. It was founded by his disciple. It is in North Calcutta. We burst crackers - the mashaals. I'm not into the banned ones, I don't believe in them.
Nondon Bagchi (Foodie, Musician): For us it's actually Kali Puja. The celebration is quite different. I do remember during my college days, it was a very special thing in our community. We used to make many things ourselves. There weren't that many restrictions then. The turbris, the ones that go high up in the air were allowed. Restrictions and bans came in right after that.
I'm still active with our Maddox Square Ritchie Park Community Puja. My boyhood Kali Pujas were special. We used to take it seriously. You know from bringing the Goddess to fireworks. Fireworks played an important part. Not noisy ones but stable turbris. They were more about light.
We used to make it ourselves. I would go along with the older boys of the community and learn the art. What was special was the art of making it.
