In love with life: Kunal Kapoor
He is the latest 'Kapoor' to hit Bollywood floors. Although he has no filmi background to boast of, Kunal Kapoor has managed a good debut for himself with reputed names firmly behind him. With the M.F. Hussain film, Meenaxi , set to music by A.R.Rahman, Kunal Kapoor starring opposite Tabu can't but get noticed. Contrary to his 'cool dude' looks, in real life Kunal comes across as a simple guy with his feet planted firmly on the ground.
In an exclusive téte-à-téte with ShaadiTimes, Kunal opens up to reveal some secrets: his first crush, relationships and his sweetheart!
What does 'love' mean to you?
I think we have narrowed the definition of 'love'. The common thinking is that love exists only between a boy and a girl, husband and wife, or between siblings. I think it is completely untrue. Love assumes different forms and shapes. You can even feel love towards a complete stranger. Love is a very beautiful, deep and intense feeling. The world is what you feel. When you are angry or upset, the world seems to be a sad place but when you feel love, the entire world seems to be so beautiful. Love is a great feeling.
Describe the two kinds of relationships you share with Tabu in Meenaxi.
The first relationship is in Jaisalmer. My character is of a youngster - not a boy, not yet a man. He is an intense and romantic poet, someone reluctant to speak his mind. He is in love with an older woman and finds it awkward and difficult to express his feelings. The second relationship is based in Prague. It is a dream relationship. It is about going to a foreign land, meeting a beautiful girl and falling in love. This guy is mature, confident and a romantic at heart. This relationship is like poetry.
I relate to both these characters at a certain level. There have been times when I was attracted to someone but could not express it openly. Various elements of the Prague episode are also present in my life - of meeting a complete stranger and falling in love. This is a relationship between a realised couple - perfect for each other. I have experienced both kinds of relationships.
Do you recall your first crush?
I started young. I was in the fourth standard when I experienced my 'first crush'. The concept of 'girl friend' and 'boy friend' was a strange one for me, but the feeling of having someone special in my life was wonderful. I treasure that memory even today.
I think every relationship is special and unforgettable. Whether good or bad, it leaves something behind; relationships are a part of life.
Is 'first love' truly special of all the relationships?
No. I don't think so. It is a common belief, perhaps, but I think every relationship can be special. It is not a rule that the first relationship has to be special. Your second, third or fourth relationship can be more special... It's all about meeting the right person. When you connect with someone and feel special, the relationship becomes special.
What are the ingredients of a good relationship?
I think, the two ingredients that are often underplayed, but are very important are: compromise and understanding. If you really want a relationship to work, you have to understand first that it is not going to be perfect, and then you have to work at it. You may like a person instantly, but if you want to live with that person, you will have to compromise at various levels. It is not something that happens automatically. If it does... you are very lucky! But otherwise, you have to work to make it successful.
What would your ideal partner be like?
She should not run away from a compromise or understanding. But most importantly, she should have a certain sense of innocence in looking at the world. That's the way I look at the world. Also, she should be someone with a positive outlook and always be open to life!
