Kajol On Her Great Loves In Life

After seven films together and so many ads, Kajol and Ajay (with Tanuja, Kajol's mother) have accepted Rock-N-Roll Family as their first television show together. Was that so they could promote the film together? Kajol is unfazed by a question that seems a tad nasty and replies, "We have been offered shows in the past and we have become judges and guests on a few. But what we liked about the show was the concept and the family values in it. We especially liked the message that age is not a deterrent for anyone to contribute to a family's growth and achievements. As for the timing, well, it fell into place!"
And what about Mr Khan, Karan Johar's new film with Shah Rukh Khan that he says she has accepted? "Karan has yet to give me a narration, and I will decide on doing the film after that. I do not think that he has said that I have signed his film. The only film I am doing now is our own home production Toonpur Ka Superhero, which is a mix of live characters and animation. I am really looking forward to that!"
Why does she work repeatedly only with Ajay and Shah Rukh? "That's not at all intentional. I have done films with almost everyone, I even had Aamir Khan in Fanaa, right?" she replies.
Kajol says that the script is what charges her, along with the filmmaker and the co-stars. "I have never believed in films being categorized, especially in this day and age when every kind of superb script is working at the box-office. But I hate morbid and dark movies, and I will never do films that I will not like to watch myself. I am that kind of person and that's my choice."
Ask how she manages variation in so many essentially similar characters, she again attributes it to the same factors. "Maybe there is a little bit of me too contributing. I have always believed that every role has potential. It's up to you what you do with it."
How does she feel about being the only heroine from the '90s to be still considered a top star? Says Kajol intensely, "I think that too much is being made of this. The industry does not change towards an actress, but the actress herself changes within. She perceives herself differently in time, and that's not wrong in itself either - because priorities can change. So she makes a choice, which may be that, for example, she may not want to come back after quitting for marriage. And choosing the right roles becomes important as you get to a different stage."
Does she watch the films of her mom Tanuja, aunt Nutan and grandmother Shobhana Samarth? "I barely watch movies - I haven't even seen much of their films. I am a voracious reader but I'm afraid I read complete trash like my fantasy fictions, my Mills & Boon stories and my historical romances. Complete pulp fiction is what interests me!"
