Jaaved Jaffrey's Journey
From Comedian To Roadside Romeo
|
Today is a fast day so Bollywood superstar Jaaved Jaafrey is rushing to complete filming. Ramzan has recently started and Jaaved, a devout Muslim looks forward to the daily ritual of prayer and time with family at the end of the day. Usually boisterous, always funny, incisively cunning, and never dull are descriptions synonymous with this lovable Bollywood star.
He has won the hearts of young and old alike in the many roles he has essayed in his career from Subhash Ghai's Meri Jung (1984) to his latest Singh is Kinng. He is most recognized for the infamous dialogue ''eggjactly'' in YashRaj's, Salaam Namaste which catapulted the star from fame to infamous overnight.
What many may not know is despite the humor and joie de vivre there is a maudlin, introspective and extremely intellectual side to the star which permeates all areas of his life. Also known as the son of yesteryear comedian Jagdeep, brother to Vee-Jay/Anchor Naaved, and husband and father to Habiba and three children, Jaaved really is a ''man for all seasons''.
Sitting in his study and chilling with the anchor / television Vee-Jay / film star Shaaditimes, catches up with the actual ''Jaaved'' as his next films are about to release. On the slate are the incorrigible Roadside Rodeo, a joint venture with Disney and YashRaj inked by eighties chocolate hero Jugal Hansraj, Manoj Tiwari's Hello Darling and Nagesh Kukanoor's Tasveer (Eight by Ten).
Casually dressed in jeans and t-shirt Jaaved looks conspicuously inconspicuous till he starts answering questions.
Why it is that everyone from the spot boys to his co-stars loves him so much?
''It's my perfume,'' he jokes. ''No, who noses,'' he touches his nose. ''I think one has to structure yourself to be liked by people. Especially in this industry people work around a false image. They then work on their image. It' one thing to ask the standard question of the technicians... 'How are you?' it's another to really mean it and wonder... 'Where do you hail from? How's your day?' Likeability may have a formula, but being truly interested is something you have to find within yourself,'' he says.
One wonders what it feels to be called "a star"?
"I don't know this star business," Jaaved admits sheepishly. "I think this is something media labels, but it is the audience and their acknowledgement, kudos and acceptance that make you a star," he thinks out loud and adds, "Plus, maybe the media plays the most important component in providing the hype - whether deserving or undeserving - in manipulating the actor / actresses image in making him or her a 'star'."
He continues, "You have to remember for the junta television is their prime source of info-tainment and subconsciously whatever is introduced on television is lapped up in peoples' minds."
Despite the constant journey to stardom Jaaved struggled in his initial years following his first release Meri Jung in 1984.
"It's a tough industry to break into. I didn't really have proper guidance. Today you have to consider yourself lucky if a highly talented individual gets a break. There are so many configurations; whether xyz is at the right place. You may have talent but it also has to be displayed to be noticed," he muses.
Now looking back after having worked with the best from Saif and Rani in Ta Ra Rum Pum to Akshay Kumar and Katrina in Sing is Kinng do you feel you have made it?
"Yes, I have arrived," he laughs melodramatically. "No I don't look at my co-stars as superstars. They have reached their avatar as stars due to their talents. For example look at Shah Rukh Khan. Not only does he have to work with all around him, he has to also be dedicated with himself, his body, his regiment. The same applies to Akshay Kumar who I've worked with recently in Sing is Kinng and now on the forthcoming release Nagesh Kukanoor's Tasveer."
He pauses, "I don't think any actor can say they feel he or she has made it. I think acting is work in progress. You are always redefining, re-inventing, and re-awakening every emotion, every gesture, and every nuance of your existence as you continue to develop your craft."
