Imran Khan The New Star Kid
|
''The character I play in 'Kidnap ' is extremely challenging!'' - Imran Khan
Most popularly known as Aamir Khan's nephew, Imran Khan came into the limelight with his very first movie - 'Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na '. He has become a star post the movie. These days he is making waves with his new movie - 'Kidnap ' - directed by Sanjay Gandhi and produced by Shri AshtaVinayak in which he plays the role of a kidnapper.
Shaaditimes presents the new kid on the block - Imran Khan!
A sweet and romantic lover boy in your first movie and now a kidnapper... what's the deal?
I'm not sworn to play the same type of character in all my films! I want to do something different in every film I do. When I signed 'Kidnap', Jaane Tu... had not even released. But even then I knew that I had to do something different. I was able to relate to the character I played in Jaane Tu .... I cannot say the same for 'Kabir' who I play in Kidnap. In fact, when Sanjay Gandhi chose me to play Kabir, I was not sure I'd be able to essay the role well. However, the Director had faith in me and inspired me to do my best.
How were you chosen for 'Kidnap'?
Producer Dhillon Mehta called me to meet him and that's where I met Sanjay Gandhi also. I'm not sure why, but when he saw me he felt I would be well suited for the role of 'Kabir'. It was only after he took three screen tests that I was finally chosen for the role.
Did you consult with your uncle Aamir Khan before you signed 'Kidnap'?
No! I don't consult with my uncle regarding my career. He is too busy with his own! I haven't even had a chance to meet Aamir uncle for the past three months. First he was busy with his film 'Gajni'. Then I was on location in South Africa for my third film 'Luck'. I've just come home a couple of days ago. You'll be surprised to know that Aamir uncle has no clue about the story of 'Luck' although I've already finished shooting over 70% of the movie.
What is the character 'Kabir' like in the movie Kidnap?
Everyone knows that Kabir is a kidnapper. Kabir Kidnaps Soniya (Minissha Lamba) who lives in Mumbai with her mother. Her billionaire father Vikrant Raina (Sanjay Dutt) is divorced from her mother and lives in New York. After kidnapping Soniya, Kabir is only willing to talk to her father. Kabir is an angry man. He's extremely vengeful. I can't tell you more than this about the character.
My getup in the movie is quite different. The director Sanjay Gandhi was very specific that Kabir should look extremely vicious so even my face has been shaded darker to make me look more dangerous. My haircut too is suited to the character. It was extremely challenging!
Any other preparations that you underwent?
The director Sanjay Gandhi did a three weeks workshop with Minissha and myself where everyday we rehearsed the screenplay and dialogues of the movie for a good 4-5 hours. This allowed us to understand our characters easily and comprehensively. Obviously, we reaped the benefits when shooting.
How many songs are there in the movie?
4 in the movie and 1 promotional song. But I'm in only one of the songs.
What did you think of Sanjay Gandhi as a Director?
He's very experienced and technically sound. When he comes to the sets he knows which actor has to do which shot and from which angle. He even knows how to edit! This made it very easy for us actors to do our job.
What do you think of your co-star Minnisha Lamba?
I've seen Minissha's first movie - Yahaan. I liked the movie and the character that Minissha played in it. When I saw the movie I had already decided that I wanted to work with Minissha some day. I was thrilled when Sanjay told me that he had chosen Minissha to play the lead opposite me. We both first met for the movie at the workshops Sanjay organized for us. She's extremely intelligent and a superb actor. We are good friends now.
What was it like to work with a distinguished actor like Sanjay Dutt?
I was very scared about working with Sanjay Dutt. In my very first scene with him I was supposed to train a gun on him and scare him. Threaten him. I told Sanjay Gandhi there's no way I can do that! It was he who told me to remember that at that point I was Kabir and only Kabir.
Anyways, when the cameras started rolling, I was holding the gun. My hands started shaking and I forgot my lines! After 4 retakes I still couldn't deliver. I told Sanjay, "Sir, I can't do this". That's when Sanjay hugged me and told me, "Relax. I'm with you. Focus and do your job. You can do it." That's when I finally gave the shot.
